'Larger than life' actor died on location but we don't know what happened 12 months later

The death of Ray Stevenson drew tributes from a range of beloved members of the industry, but no light was ever shone on his official cause of death.

Boasting roles in the likes of HBO’s Rome, Dexter and a coveted position in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, actor Ray Stevenson spent two decades crafting an impressive CV in the entertainment world. With question marks still remaining over his death on set this time last year, we’re looking back at what Stevenson meant to his peers, on what would have been the week of a special birthday of his.

Stevenson was on set on the Italian island of Ischia while filming the movie Cassino in Ischia, when he was suddenly rushed to a nearby hospital on May 21, 2023, reports indicate.

The seasoned actor was in the early stages of filming a lead role in the movie and following a suspension in production, Prison Break’s Dominic Purcell replaced Stevenson.

Stevenson passed just days before his 59th birthday, and would have been celebrating his 60th this coming weekend. While it was confirmed that he was on location around the time of his passing, no official cause of death has ever been publicized.

Stars pay tribute to ‘larger than life’ Stevenson

Having clearly forged strong ties within the industry, a host of movie figures came together to pay tribute to Stevenson on social media in the wake of his passing.

Taking to Twitter (X), Stevenson’s former co-star James Purefoy wrote: “So sad to hear the news that Ray Stevenson, our Pullo in Rome, has passed away.

“A brilliant, gutsy, larger-than-life actor who filled every part he played right up to the brim. My thoughts are with his family, his lovely wife Betta and their beautiful kids. What a loss.”

And Purefoy’s sentiments were shared by the legendary Mark Hamill, of Luke Skywalker fame:

On Instagram, Welsh actor Luke Evans wrote: “Goodbye my friend. You were a kind and loving human, full of life and energy, you were the giant who I stood by and admired.

“I will miss your bear hugs and your contagious laughter. My love I’m sending to you Betta and your wonderful family. Rest in power Big bro x”

And on the anniversary of his death, the Star Wars community came together to remember Stevenson, who they say will always be accompanied by the force:

Steven appeared posthumously in Disney‘s Star Wars Ahsoka, in which he played the role of Baylan Skoll.
