Newcastle fans have a big problem with Jarrod Bowen as interest in West Ham star emerges

Newcastle United missed their chance to sign Jarrod Bowen when Steve Bruce was manager, but now Eddie Howe wants to make up for lost time.

The Magpies’ attempt to sign Jarrod Bowen when he was still at Hull City is well documented, with Mike Ashley unwilling to spend the £22million that was required.

That decision has haunted Newcastle United ever since, with the 27-year-old performing brilliantly in the Premier League ever since his move to West Ham United. He even scored one of their most famous goals ever, netting the winner in last season’s Europa Conference League final.

Bowen has been incredible for the Hammers, much to the envy of Newcastle. They have looked on with jealously, whilst flirting with the idea of trying to bring him to St James’ Park again. The England international has been linked with a move to Tyneside since PIF’s takeover on multiple occasions, and it appears that he is on Eddie Howe‘s radar once again.

Newcastle United interested in signing Jarrod Bowen

The Telegraph have provided details of two players that Newcastle United would like to sign this summer. The first is Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who would arrive as a replacement for Callum Wilson.

And the second target is West Ham talisman Jarrod Bowen. The Telegraph report that Toon officials have discussed trying to sign the right winger, with the hierarchy all in agreement that he would be a good addition.

There is no denying that is the case, given what he has achieved in claret and blue since his arrival in East London.

Bowen would be a great addition to Newcastle’s attack

Bowen has become a consistent source of goals on that right flank, and has just enjoyed his most prolific year ever. He found the net 20 times in all competitions, with 16 of his goals coming in the Premier League. That is only five less that Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

Adding Bowen to Newcastle’s front three alongside Isak and Anthony Gordon would give Eddie Howe a fearsome frontline, as well as three players who can all alternate positions. Isak has played on the left for Newcastle, while Gordon has been asked to operate on the left, right and through the middle.

As for Bowen, he would give Newcastle extra depth up front too, which makes him even more appealing given the Magpies’ striker issues.

Newcastle fans have one concern over Bowen transfer

However, there is one big issue for Newcastle United fans regarding Bowen. While there is no doubting his quality, his price tag would surely be an issue.

That is the concern for Toon fans, who have reacted to rumours of interest in Bowen on X (formerly known as Twitter).

“Can only imagine what sort of fee it would take to break Bowen out of that 7 year contract he signed last season. Don’t think it fits with our PSR restricted MO,” one Newcastle fan pondered.

This supporter was more forthright, stating: “Never happening in a million years. Bowen would cost about 80 million on his own.”

“Would love him [Bowen] at #NUFC super talent, would be expensive though, another perfect RW option for sure,” tweeted another Newcastle fan.

“Bowen would be class but surely he won’t sign or would cost too much after signing a new deal,” commented a fourth member of the Toon Army.

This supporter thinks there is no way Bowen is arriving, adding: “No chance we’d be paying the fee needed for Bowen, absolutely zero.”

This final fan sums it up, writing: “We’ll never get Bowen, they’ll be wanting £70m+.”

As these Newcastle fans have pointed out, Bowen will surely cost too much money. He recently signed a new seven-year deal with West Ham that will keep him at the London Stadium until 2030.

Buying him out of that deal is surely beyond Newcastle, whose current transfer record is the £63million spent on Alexander Isak in 2022.
