Report: Newcastle now plotting move to sign £22m player who already agreed to join them in 2020

Newcastle are now planning a move to sign a player who actually agreed to join the Magpies back in January 2020.

Despite a strong end to the 2023/24 campaign, which saw the Magpies win six and draw two of their final ten Premier League outings, last season still technically saw Newcastle go backwards.

Eddie Howe‘s side finished seventh on 60 points – three places and 11 points worse off in comparison to the 2022/23 campaign – although injuries hit the Magpies hard.

As such, Newcastle understandably want to bolster their squad, with a double deal now on the agenda…

Newcastle want Jarrod Bowen and Dominic Calvert-Lewin

A story from the Telegraph now claims that Newcastle want to sign West Ham No.20 Jarrod Bowen and Everton No.9 Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.

It is said that Newcastle previously made several attempts to sign the England international from West Ham, although the east Londoners have continuously rejected enquiries.

Interestingly, the Telegraph also add that Bowen actually agreed to join Newcastle back in January 2020, although Mike Ashley could not stump up the £22m asking price, a fee West Ham later paid.

The 27-year-old has since become one of the best forwards in England, scoring 20 goals while also providing ten assists in 44 appearances across all competitions last season.

In regards to Calvert-Lewin, the Telegraph explain that any move for the Everton talisman hinges on Callum Wilson being sold, although the recruitment team on Tyneside strongly believe Howe can get the best out of the 27-year-old if a deal materialises.

The Sheffield-born striker scored just seven goals in 32 Premier League appearances last season.

Eddie Howe has big plans

Strengthening the attacking department at Newcastle is not all Howe wants to do this summer.

The 46-year-old is also keen to sign a new goalkeeper to compete with Nick Pope, and there is strong interest in a deal for Arsenal No.1 Aaron Ramsdale.

Sources recently informed TBR Football that Newcastle are ready to accelerate their pursuit of the England international, and the Gunners are ready to let him depart.

Therefore, if Howe gets his way, a number of England internationals could arrive at St James’ Park this summer.
