Taylor Swift's first-ever fan met her by 'pure chance' before she recorded any music

One of the most feel-good Taylor Swift stories is the tale of how she met her first-ever fan, Holly, who is now an important member of the online Swiftie community.

According to data published last year, as many as 53% of Americans identify as a fan of Taylor Swift, who ranks as the 15th most famous pop music artist alive or dead, according to Britsh survey experts YouGov. But before the sold-out arenas, the glamourous celebrity relationship and the general world domination – there was a time when Swift had zero fans. That was until Holly came along at least.

Story of how Taylor Swift met her first-ever fan Holly is far too wholesome

So the story goes that way back in 2003, Holly Armstrong was on a family holiday in New York and while relaxing on Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, she happened across an intimate performance.

Sat on stage was Swift, then aged just 13, who was performing country tracks in her accent to a group of around five people. Enamored by what she had just seen, Armstrong, who is the same age as Swift, went to strike up a conversation with the soon-to-be superstar – and the pair exchanged niceties as Swift signed a demo CD for Armstrong, having not officially recorded any music in a studio at this point.

Remarkably, in the years that followed, Armstrong amassed a decent following on Tumblr – leading to a reunion moment between her and Swift, who came back to visit her ‘first ever fan’ in August 2019 – 16 years on from their first meeting. Swift, now a superstar by this point, was heralded for coming back to Armstrong while the fan was going through “a bad time”, making for a tale that still chokes Swifties up to this day.

Holly is now a figure in the Swiftie community

Inspired by her story of dedication, Armstrong is now a beacon of hope for many Swift devotees, and has even picked up her own nickname.

Armstrong, known among the fandom as the ‘Mother of Swifties’, has over 23,000 followers on Twitter (X) – where she remains as utterly devoted and committed to following the daily ventures of Swift as any other dedicated fan.

Reacting to a recent post about her Swift story, Armstrong wrote: “I will never not share these (pictures) because they make my day and I love this adorably supportive, accepting, loving, celebratory community with 113% of my heart.

“Thank you ALWAYS for the smiles”.

The love between Armstrong and her fans is clearly reciprocated, with one “full-time Swiftie” account even taking the opportunity to wish her a happy birthday recently:
