'They were brilliant': Jamie Carragher shares what Liverpool's transfer team are 'unbelievable at

Liverpool have made many marquee signings over the years, with the likes of Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez among the big names to arrive at Anfield.

Reds fans certainly can’t have too many complaints about their transfer team given such signings, with that duo and many others making a real impact on Merseyside.

Perhaps a few more big names will be needed in the upcoming summer transfer window if Liverpool are to progress under Arne Slot.

Fortunately, the new boss will be aided by former Anfield sporting director Michael Edwards, who will now begin a new role with Fenway Sports Group as CEO of Football.

Richard Hughes meanwhile has been appointed as the club’s new sporting director, and is certain to play a key role when it comes to signing new players this summer.

Liverpool transfer team “unbelievable” at selling – Jamie Carragher

For former Reds central defender Jamie Carragher, one aspect of the club’s transfer policy really stands out.

And that is how successful they have been when selling players, particularly those who were not major names at Anfield.

“When people talk about Liverpool being really good at transfers. What Liverpool were unbelievable at was selling, for really big fees,” Carragher said on the Stick to Football podcast.

“Everyone talks about Philippe Coutinho. It was a bizarre figure. But they’d get around £20million, £25million for players who’d only played a few games.

“Dominic Solanke went to Bournemouth, he played about 10, 15, 20 games for Liverpool, and they got around £25million for him.

“So they were brilliant at that. There was also a left-back called Brad Smith who went for about £15million.”

Philippe Coutinho and the other major Liverpool sales

As Carragher mentioned, the Cherries spent big on a handful of Reds players who were surplus to requirements, with winger Jordon Ibe also on that list.

Coutinho does, however, lead the way in terms of record sales for his £142million move to Barcelona, followed by Suarez’s £75million switch to the same destination.

The Reds made £50million for the sale of Torres to Chelsea, while Raheem Sterling joined Manchester City for £49million.

Another attacker could join them on that list, with Liverpool set to demand in excess of £100million from Saudi clubs for winger Mohamed Salah.

There is also speculation around the future of Darwin Nunez, but Fabrizio Romano has cooled the exit talk regarding the Uruguay forward.
