New Old Buckenham captain Matt Bint has spoken about the ‘privilege’ he has in leading the club that he joined when he was eight years old, and how his side is fuelled with ambition to return to the Lacons Brewery Norfolk Cricket Alliance Premier Division.
The 24-year-old took over as captain from Rob Goodwin two weeks ago after serving as the club’s vice captain for the previous three seasons.
His first game in the role was at the weekend, where he led Old Buckenham to a 65-run victory at home to Great Melton.
“It was nice to be asked to do it. I’ve played at the club since I was eight years old so it’s the only club I’ve played for. I’m really happy to be offered the chance to do it,” he said.
“It’s a privilege and something I’m very proud of, but most of all I’m looking forward to playing with the lads and making some memories as a group, and trying to push the club forward to return to the Premier Division.
“I’m looking forward to it, we’ve got a good group of lads at the club this year and we’re looking to build on last year.”
After a fifth-placed finish in Division One last season, where they ended the campaign 36 points off the promotion spots, Old Buckenham have made some additions on and off the field in the hope that they can go one better this term.
In the summer, they made a double swoop from Brooke to sign Ben Baldwin and Lucas Innes as well as bringing in Dylan Herathge from Swardeston.
Bint has been particularly impressed with the former, who tallied 81 runs in Old Buckenham’s successful chase of 294 away at Bradenham two weeks ago.
The club, run by volunteers, have also renovated the pavilion, moved their grounds equipment into a purpose-built garage and extended the clubhouse bar area.
“People put a lot of time and effort into the club to make it the best it can possibly be, and give us the facilities to better our own abilities but also the space, where we can enjoy each other’s company and welcome opposition as well,” said Bint.
“It always motivates you knowing people put in so much effort off the pitch.
“We’re looking to try and build on fifth place. We weren’t a million miles off (promotion) last year. It’s a game of fine margins and at times we just came out on the wrong side of some close games.
“Hopefully we can learn from that and build upon it this year, and try and challenge for promotion.”
