Portuguese coach has now applied to join Arne Slot’s backroom team at Liverpool

Liverpool are busy preparing for a new era under the guidance of Arne Slot.

With Jurgen Klopp having departed the club on Sunday, the sadness of his farewell is still lingering around the fanbase.

But the reality is that there’s much to look forward to for Liverpool. Plenty of good things have been said about Slot who seems like a great appointment from FSG.

Of course it isn’t just the former Feyenoord head coach who will be arriving, though. Liverpool are having to assemble a whole new coaching team after many of the old staff left with Klopp.

Some of those positions are likely to filled by Slot’s men arriving with him from Rotterdam. But after Feyenoord reportedly blocked the possibility of taking more coaches to the AXA Training Centre, Liverpool have had to get creative.

Liverpool get set-piece coach application

Some eagle-eyed fans spotted earlier this week that Liverpool had posted an advert for a new set-piece coach on social media site LinkedIn.

This would be a new position at Anfield, with responsibility for coaching all areas previously left to Pep Lijnders.

With Lijnders on his way out though, a specialist has now been sought.

And according to Portuguese outlet Record, they know the identity of one such applicant for the role.

They claim that a certain Ruben Pinheiro has submitted his credentials for the role, and hopes to be chosen to work under Slot’s new regime.

Who is Ruben Pinheiro?

Record also publish some quotes from Pinheiro about his philosophy when it comes to coaching set-pieces.

And judging by his LinkedIn profile, the Portuguese has done a fair bit of it.

It doesn’t appear as though Pinheiro has ever been a specialist, mind you. Rather, his background is in coaching youth teams.

Having taking in various jobs as a head coach and assistant head coach in Portugal, Pinheiro has plenty of experience under his belt, but perhaps not even to fill what Liverpool are looking for.

So, while the Reds will no doubt evaluate all the suitable applicants, we’re not completely sure Pinheiro falls into this category. Let’s wait and see if we hear more about him.
