Report: Man City now want £378k-a-week man to sign a long-term contract at the Etihad

Manchester City reportedly want to offer one of their key figures a new long-term contract.

The Manchester club have seen numerous players sign fresh deals to keep them at the Etihad Stadium in recent years such as Bernardo Silva, Kyle Walker and Phil Foden among others.

Now though, after winning their sixth Premier League title in seven years last weekend, some behind-the-scenes details have emerged regarding another key figure that the club are looking to keep around for a while longer.

A recent report from the Daily Mail had this to say on the matter.

It said: “Manchester City want Pep Guardiola to sign a new, long-term contract that would see him extend his trophy-laden stay at the Etihad Stadium beyond a decade.

“He is yet to make a decision on what happens next and City bosses will support him in whatever he chooses, such is his standing at the club.

“They would like to see Guardiola, 53, pen a significant extension which would allow him to add to the 17 major trophies he has lifted following his arrival eight years ago. City will place no pressure on Guardiola and the decision will be his.

“It is also understood that he has discussed the situation with at least one key player over dinner recently to gather their thoughts and input.”

A new contract for Guardiola would be great news for City

As things stand, the 53-year-old’s current deal at City is set to expire in the summer of 2025, meaning that next season could be his last if he doesn’t extend.

After last weekend’s title-winning victory over West Ham United, the £378k-a-week manager revealed that he is currently leaning towards leaving the club at the end of his current contract rather than extending, but said that this is something he will talk to the club about at some point next season.

Having won six Premier League titles in eight years at the Manchester club, it goes without saying that if the Catalan were to put pen to paper on a fresh contract and stay at the club for at least another two years or more, this would be the best news any City fan could hear.
