'He was class': Patrick Vieira says player who left the Etihad in 2020 was Man City's own Dennis Bergkamp

Patrick Vieria has compared one former Manchester City star to Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp.

The Frenchman is always recognised for his contribution in the Premier League during his time at Arsenal, but many forget he played 46 times for Manchester City as well.

When he was there, Vieria shared the dressing room with a City legend, and he has now raved about him.

Patrick Vieira names one similarity between David Silva and Dennis Bergkamp

Manchester City signed David Silva from Valencia in July 2010.

Everybody knew at the time that the Spaniard was a hugely talented footballer, but nobody quite expected him to become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

Silva played 436 games for Manchester City during his 10 years at the club.

He scored 77 goals and provided 130 assists for the Blues and helped them win four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five League Cups and three Community Shields.

The Spaniard left the Etihad in the summer of 2020 after a decade at Manchester City. He is fondly remembered even to this day and is an absolute legend of the club.

Vieira played with some legendary players for club and country during his time as a player.

Dennis Bergkamp was his teammate at Arsenal for many years, and while talking about Silva now, Vieira compared the Manchester City star to the Dutch icon.

He told Manchester City’s official website: “David Silva? He was class, simple as that. I didn’t play long with him but, for me, he was the team player.

“I think David Silva would want others to shine more than him. He was the Dennis Bergkamp of City. He would want to please his teammates more than he would want to please himself. Dennis was like that.

“He would prefer to assist rather than score the goal because he enjoyed that more. David gave a lot to his team rather than worry about himself. He was a team player.”

One current Manchester City star surpassed Silva’s goal tally in 2024

David Silva was a joy to watch in his prime at Manchester City.

The Spaniard was a magician with the ball at his feet. He wasn’t the biggest or strongest, but he had the ability to make world-class players look like amateurs when they tried to get the ball off him.

Manchester City have a new generation of world-class players now, and one of them is Phil Foden.

The Englishman had a spectacular campaign in 2023/24. He scored 27 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions and even won the Player of the Season award.

Another incredible feat Foden achieved in the season was that he surpassed Silva’s goal tally for Manchester City after a brace against Manchester United in March

The Englishman now has 87 goals to his name – 10 more than Silva managed in his 10 years at the Etihad Stadium.
