Report: What Newcastle may now be wary about when trying to sign player with 'contagious' charisma

It’s going to be fascinating to see what Newcastle United are able to do in the transfer market this summer.

Indeed, after a fallow January period in which Newcastle were unable to sign any players, there has been talk of a rebuild at St James’ Park over the next few months.

FFP limitations are seemingly likely to remain in player but it appears as if Eddie Howe wants to strengthen in goal.

Aaron Ramsdale, who Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has hailed as having a “contagious” levels of charisma, is said to be a target.

Last week, reports even emergedsuggesting that Newcastle had held talks with the Gunners over the prospect of a move.

It must be said that Giorgi Mamardashvili of Valencia has also been linked, while Nick Pope wants to stay on Tyneside.

Still, Martin Dubravka will reportedly be allowed to depart, perhaps explaining the search for a new goalkeeper.

However, things regarding Ramsdale might be slightly complicated.

What Newcastle may be wary about when it comes to trying to sign Aaron Ramsdale

According to iNews, the England international has admirers at Newcastle.

They add that one key thing to consider, however, is that paying the Gunners a sizeable transfer fee could help them balance the books as they pursue Bruno Guimaraes.

The Newcastle midfielder has a £100m release clause in his contract and Arsenal are understood to need to sell before they can buy.

Banking money from Ramsdale would help them out on that front, meaning Newcastle would have to think very wisely before going further ahead with their interest.

Giorgi Mamardashvili should be Newcastle’s target instead

Not only is Mamardashvili three years younger than Ramsdale, signing him would not bolster a domestic rivals’ transfer budget.

Thought to be open to a move to the Premier League and reportedly the subject of £30m talks at Newcastle, the Georgian international seems a much more wise addition.

During the 22-23 season (the campaign in which Ramsdale last played regular football), the Valencia stopper also boasted a better post-shot expected goals rating.

That metric measures how well a goalkeeper did when faced with a high-quality chance, with positive numbers indicating an above-average ability to stop would-be goals.

His average (via FBREF) stood at -0.1, while Ramsdale’s stood at -2.

With that in mind, Mamardashvili looks the more logical addition.
