‘Good career ahead of him’: Phil Foden reckons ‘intelligent’ Man City youngster is destined for great things

Phil Foden has said that one of Manchester City’s young players is going to have a very impressive career.

After working his way through the youth ranks at his boyhood club, the midfielder has now comfortably made himself a regular figure in the senior team.

Now though, the England international has highlighted another figure at the Manchester club who has been following in his footsteps and made an interesting claim about him.

In a recent video shared on the Football Manager TikTok channel, Foden had this to say when asked which young English player excites him the most at the moment.

He said: “I’d probably say Rico Lewis. He’s such an intelligent footballer for a young age. I think he’s going to have a good career ahead of him.”

After making 45 appearances for City’s youth ranks, the 19-year-old made his senior debut back in August 2022.

Since then, the teenager has made 50 senior appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side across all competitions prior to today’s FA Cup final against Manchester United.

Lewis has proven himself to be a unique talent

Having played in numerous defensive and midfield positions during his time in City’s senior squad and has been described by Guardiola as an “intelligent” and “reliable” player, it’s easy to see why Foden is so convinced that Lewis will go on to have a very successful career.

The versatile youngster also made his senior England debut this season when he appeared in the 1-1 draw against North Macedonia back in November.

After that game, Gareth Southgate called Lewis a “unique player” and a “fabulous asset” for England to have at their disposal.

Moving forward, if the Englishman can continue to work hard and take any chances that come his way to perform and show everyone just what he’s capable of, we feel that Foden’s prediction about Lewis having a strong career will come true.
