Rangers v Celtic team news confirmed: Yilmaz in, Lundstram benched

Rangers take on Celtic in what could be a season defining fixture as Philippe Clement looks to land his second trophy as Rangers boss.

The manager has his usual injury list to contend with, having half of his first choice defence absent and all of his preferred attack missing is far from ideal.

Despite the walking wounded, this is the team that Rangers have thrown together to face Celtic in the hope of bringing the Scottish Cup back to Ibrox.

Rangers v Celtic team news confirmed

Jack Butland can count on one of his massive hands how often he’s had the club’s strongest defence in front of him.

Clement could have done without Ridvan Yilmaz suffering a setback against Hearts and with John Souttar passing a fitness test.

With Borna Barisic and Dujon Sterling both having had spells on the sidelines recently, the only fully fit and natural left-back is Robbie Fraser but it is the Turkey international who has been patched up to start.

There are the same limitations in the middle with just Leon Balogun and Ben Davies as the only available senior centre-halves.

Midfield sees John Lundstram on the bench.

He had a disaster at Parkhead and Nicolas Raskin has been trusted to provide more energy and aggression.

If he does, it could well be the difference.

Mohamed Diomande makes up the numbers in the engine room in an area where there needs to be more mobility and energy than the last time the two sides met.

This is how Rangers line-up:

Rangers forward line has a familiar look

In the last two derbies, Fabio Silva has roasted Alistair Johnston and confident forwards should always be played.

On the right, Ross McCausland can count himself unlucky not to start after his recent form and Abdallah Sima clearly isn’t fit enough to start.

Todd Cantwell gets the chance to make up for not playing at Parkhead and what side of him turns up could be the difference between the two sides with Sterling taking up his place on the right-hand side again.

Leading the line is the one, and only Cyriel Dessers, despite popular opinion, he is one of a few players who have turned up against Celtic this season.

Hopefully, he remembers his shooting boots.

It’s not quite a chance for a battered and bruised squad to make amends for an appalling league season but is a chance to go into the summer with renewed optimism in what could be the last time we see some of these players in a Rangers shirt.
