The Oklahoma State Cowboys have crushed the Oklahoma Sooners’ dreams of leaving the Big 12 as both regular-season and tournament champions. The Cowboys took home the title, taking down the Sooners by a score of 9-3.

Oklahoma State took care of business on Saturday with suffocating defense and strong pitching by reliever turned-starter Tommy Molsky, Gabe Davis, and company. Molsky allowed just four hits, two earned runs, and one walk when facing 19 batters. He also had eight strikeouts to his name while throwing 71 total pitches in 4.1 innings of work before handing the ball off to Davis.

The Cowboys were the first to score with a Zach Ehrhard RBI in the first inning. A sacrifice flyout to center field brought in the Cowboys and the game’s first score, giving them a 1-0 lead. That score would last until the top of the fifth when Oklahoma State expanded on its lead.

Oklahoma State would add to the lead, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth. One of those runs was courtesy of an error via a wild pitch by Sooners’ starting pitcher, Carter Campbell. However, Oklahoma would get into the scoring action, putting up two runs of their own, bringing the game to within two runs, 4-2. But that is as close as the Cowboys would allow the Sooners to get.

In the seventh inning, Oklahoma State added three more runs to the scoreboard thanks to a Nolan Schubart three-run home run to put this on top 7-2. And in the eighth, back-to-back home runs by designated hitter Kollin Ritchie and catcher Ian Daughtry would balloon the lead to 9-2. The Oklahoma Sooners would tack on one more run, but the deficit was too much for them to overcome in the final innings of the game and the Cowboys would win 9-3.

With the win, Oklahoma State has put itself firmly in the conversation of being a host team during this year’s tournament. The Cowboys, who were ranked in the top 20 of the top 25 when the tournament started, are looking to finish off 2024 as not just Big 12 tournament champions but also NCAA champions. But for now, they’ll have to wait and see how things shake out during the selection show to figure out how this year’s story will end.
