‘Thrilling’: Damon Hill believes ‘everyone is rooting’ for £515k-a-week driver to win the Monaco Grand Prix

The Monaco Grand Prix is typically decided during Saturday’s qualifying session but anything can happen once the race begins.

There are still suggestions that the weather could be changeable and with one mistake all it takes to end a driver’s race; safety cars could also play a key part.

Damon Hill posted on social media after qualifying and gave his verdict on what he saw in the principality.

The times between the top drivers were incredibly close and the top five drivers all benefitted from Max Verstappen touching the barriers going into turn one of his final flying lap.

It’s opened up another opportunity for Red Bull to be beaten this weekend, especially with Sergio Perez failing to get out of Q1.

Hill believes that everyone hopes Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc will end his long wait to finally win at his home race at Monaco.

He’s had some incredibly bad luck on his previous visits to the circuit but will hope having a clear run going into the first corner will give him the best chance possible of ending his long wait for a race win.

Damon Hill thinks everyone will be ‘rooting’ for Charles Leclerc at the Monaco Grand Prix

All the pressure was on Charles Leclerc heading into the final session of qualifying on Saturday.

The £515,000-a-week driver had been supremely fast throughout practice and he had to make sure he made the most of that advantage.

His closest rival was Oscar Piastri who is becoming a demon in qualifying with his fully upgraded McLaren.

The young Australian once again posted a quicker time than teammate Lando Norris but unlike at Imola, he hasn’t received a grid penalty for impeding.

However, despite being within two-tenths of the Monegasque driver, he couldn’t prevent Leclerc from taking pole position.

Leclerc bemoaned one decision Ferrari made during the session in Monaco but Damon Hill thinks everyone wants to see the 26-year-old win his home race.

He’s got a fantastic chance, but luck has never been on his side when racing on the narrow streets of Monte Carlo.

Charles Leclerc has the perfect opportunity to end his long wait for Monaco Grand Prix victory

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, after qualifying, Hill said: “Some momentos of a thrilling qualifying. Is Charles going to make this stick?

“With three Monaco poles, he really should get this one. But he as [has] never won from his last 12!! poles!! Nice job so far Charles. Everyone is rooting for you on Sunday. #Monaco #f1 #Ferrari.”

Leclerc is said to have one key advantage over teammate Carlos Sainz in Monaco but if Hill’s hopes are set to come true, he’s going to need the Spaniard to play his part on Sunday.

Strategy is going to play a key role in Monte Carlo, with Piastri splitting the Ferraris and in a brilliant position to ruin Leclerc’s hopes of winning the race.

With Lando Norris directly behind his teammate, those on the pit wall will have a crucial role to play in who takes victory.

Despite starting in 6 place, it’s impossible to ever rule out Max Verstappen and if anyone can overtake on the narrow streets of the principality, it’s the triple world champion.
