Liverpool still need to pay £35m if they want to sign ‘hugely talented’ Chelsea player

Liverpool might be looking for new signings under Arne Slot this summer but if they go back in for one Chelsea star, they’ll need to stump up £35m.

The Reds are embarking a new era under Arne Slot and new signings are bound to be on the agenda for the Dutchman.

Quite where Slot will look to strengthen the squad is open to interpretation. But he will have to work within the framework set by Michael Edwards and FSG.

Of course, we know there’ll be some money to spend and Slot will want to carefully assess where he adds players.

Left-back might be a position the Reds strengthen, with Kostas Tsimikas’ future uncertain.

However, should the Reds fancy going for a previous target, Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen, FSG will need to pay a big fee for the Chelsea-owned full-back.

Chelsea still want £35m for Ian Maatsen after previous links

While there’s been no up to date links suggested Liverpool would look at Maatsen again, the left-back has enjoyed a good season with Dortmund.

As we know, Liverpool were linked with a move for Maatsen back in 2023 when Jurgen Klopp was looking to add competition for Andy Robertson at left-back.

And according to GiveMeSport, should any club want to sign Maatsen this summer, Chelsea will demand a huge £35m fee for their man.

Described in The Athletic as a player who is ‘hugely talented’, Maatsen ticks boxes for the Reds given he is only 22 and plays in a position that will need to be sorted in the next few seasons as Robertson gets older.

However, at £35m, and given his lack of Premier League experience, he still represents a pricey signing with relative risk for the Reds.

Liverpool also need players in other positions this summer. Quite whether spending so much on a left-back yet to prove himself in England makes sense, only FSG and co will know.
