URGENT: Japan asks China to lift seafood import ban immediately: Kishida

Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he asked China's Premier Li Qiang in talks Sunday for an immediate lifting of its ban on Japanese seafood products, imposed after the discharge of treated radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Kishida also told reporters after his first formal bilateral meeting with Li that China was asked to release a Japanese citizen who has been detained for alleged espionage as soon as possible.

On the security front, Kishida said he conveyed Japan's "serious concern" about China's military expansion, adding that Japan believes stability in the Taiwan Strait is "crucial" for the region and the international community.
