Report: One of Newcastle's highest-earners is at risk of being sold this summer

Newcastle United could be busy this summer.

Though there has been talk of a major rebuild of Eddie Howe’s squad, it remains to be seen quite how heavily FFP limitations impact what the club can do over the next few months.

While it’s only natural to focus on exactly who Newcastle may sign during the transfer window, potential outgoings are arguably just as big a story right now.

Indeed, though no one will want to lose either Alexander Isak or Bruno Guimaraes, they have both been linked with moves away.

In an ideal world of course, neither would go.

Still, the club are reportedly looking to raise money through player sales.

Callum Wilson is being tipped to leave St James’ Park soon, while Miguel Almiron is believed to be another who may go.

Shifting out players on big money will no doubt help Newcastle fund signings of their own, albeit finding buyers may be difficult.

Which brings us to one of the club’s highest earners.

Matt Targett is at risk of being sold by Newcastle – but there’s a complication

Matt Targett, who has endured an injury-hit season, is believed to be one of Newcastle’s highest earners right now.

The left-back saw Dan Burn overtake him for a starting berth not long after joining from Aston Villa, while Lewis Hall is increasingly growing into the role following a difficult start.

According to The Chronicle, Targett is one of the players at risk of being sold this summer.

Luckily for Newcastle, the report adds that “bottom half” Premier League clubs were keen on the former Southampton youngster, although his injury since may have complicated matters.

Matt Targett is a player Newcastle should desperately look to sell

Shifting those wages – thought to be in the region of £100k-per-week – off the bill would be a major boost for Newcastle.

Were Targett playing regularly, it would feel like money well spent. However, with two players ahead of him, it’s surely more of a drain than anything.

While Howe has spoken positively about the defender, it feels like a natural time to part ways.

Hopefully, the interest is still there…
