Report: Tottenham could now make move to sign ‘terrific’ midfielder after scouting him for two years

Tottenham Hotspur are continuing to monitor a Championship player they have been scouting since 2022.

It looks set to be a busy summer at Tottenham as they go about building a squad in Ange Postecoglou’s image.

Spurs secured a Europa League spot for next season thanks to a fifth-place finish and there is plenty of work to be done to prepare for a return to Europe.

It’s well-documented that Postecoglou wants additions at centre-back, in midfield and upfront.

One player who Spurs have been long linked with a move for is talented Middlesborough midfielder Hayden Hackney.

Tottenham were reportedly plotting a move for Hackney in January and it would seem the Englishman remains on their radar.

Tottenham could move for Hayden Hackney

The Northern Echo claims that Spurs’ interest in Hackney is long-standing after scouting him during the 2022-23 season.

Tottenham continued to track the 21-year-old’s progress during the first half of last season and remain keen.

Despite picking up an injury which kept him out for the final three months of the season, it shouldn’t deter the north Londoner’s interest.

Tottenham should learn from Adam Wharton mistake

Spurs missed out on the signing of Adam Wharton in January as the talented midfielder completed a switch from Blackburn Rovers to Crystal Palace.

Wharton has since thrived in the Premier League, earning a call-up to the England squad ahead of the Euros.

Tottenham will surely be keen to avoid a similar mistake when it comes to Hackney, who is also attracting interest from Newcastle.

Hackney has impressed for Boro over the past couple of seasons under the guidance of former Spurs star Michael Carrick, who lauded him as a ‘terrific‘ talent back in December 2022.

This season, he had a hand in four goals in 28 appearances before missing the remainder of the campaign through injury.
