There are too many New Jersey military service men and women in America’s history to name and honor them all in a short column like mine. For this Memorial Day weekend, though, I wanted to highlight one amazing naval officer, who retired at the age of 79 — and who also helped pioneer the development of the electronic computer.

Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopperwas the oldest serving officer in the U.S. Armed Forces.

During her illustrious career, she helped to standardize the Navy’s multiple computer languages. Her subordinates nicknamed her “Amazing Grace.” The USS Hopper is named after her. And while the late Hopper (1906-1992) was born in New York, she did attend Hartridge School in Plainfield just before starting her college career, according to Yale University where she earned her master’s and Ph.D.

She’s just one example of how you can’t spell “military” without “IT” – information technology.

On this note, I’d like to personally invite Star-Ledger subscribers who have not yet taken advantage of the technological advances available to you during a live Q&A on how to use the online newspaper.

This Wednesday (May 29), from 6 to 7 p.m., I’ll be joined by my colleagues at our parent company Advance Local, Susan Probert, the director of Customer Relations, and Geri Canny, the manager of Enterprise Retention, for an interactive session designed to provide helpful insights about the online newspaper.

If you have not yet activated your online newspaper account or have activated it but have not used the platform, this webinar is for you.

To register, email Susan and Geri at webinar@advancelocal.com.

Once registered, they will send you an email from Advance Local confirming the registration details, which will include the webinar date, time and link to join the meeting.

During the webinar, you’ll learn, among other things:

  • How to use the page magnification function to zoom in and out of articles
  • How to increase text size
  • How to print articles and puzzles
  • How to share articles with friends and family
  • How to access other online publications, such as the Update section and The New York Times Books Review

I’ll be there to answer questions about how we produce content and any other questions about our journalism at NJ Advance Media, which provides content to NJ.com and The Star-Ledger. I’m excited to talk about some new content initiatives about to be rolled out.

Two additional webinars are scheduled for June 18 and June 26.
