Wrexham's James McClean visits his former club but misses out on dream weekend

Wrexham’s season has been over for a while now but James McClean has been taking in some football away from the STōK Cae Ras.

The League Two campaign ended on the 27th April with Wrexham securing a 2-1 victory over Stockport County almost a month ago.

That brought down the curtain on the League Two campaign but Wrexham’s job was done two weeks earlier.

Beating Forest Green Rovers at home saw Wrexham secure promotion to League One and finalise back-to-back promotions.

Wrexham players may have been forgiven for not being all that bothered about the final two games of the campaign, but they instead came up with two more wins.

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds paid for the squad to celebrate in Las Vegas once again and Wrexham players are able to somewhat relax ahead of what is bound to be a gruelling pre-season schedule.

Some Wrexham players will be away recharging their batteries, but James McClean had other plans in mind this weekend.

McClean played a key role in Wrexham’s promotion and looks set to feature in League One as well.

Wrexham have activated an option in McClean’s deal, ensuring that he remains under contract after promotion.

The former Republic of Ireland international has shown his versatility at left wing back or in midfield under Phil Parkinson, becoming an important player for Wrexham.

This weekend, McClean decided to go back to where it all started by visiting former club Derry City.

The Derry-born veteran hit 18 goals in 88 games for Derry City before heading straight to the Premier League with Sunderland in 2011.

McClean has carved about a superb career for himself and headed back to Brandywell Stadium for Friday’s clash with Sligo Rovers.

The Wrexham ace saw his former club play out a 2-2 draw, twice coming from behind to score a point.

McClean almost has his dream weekend

That result was the only part of McClean’s dream weekend which didn’t come to fruition.

Speaking to Derry City FC’s official YouTube channel, McClean admitted that he wanted to see victories for Derry City before wins for Celtic and Manchester United on Saturday.

Celtic beat Rangers in the Scottish Cup final before United produced a surprise by beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Derry City were the only let down in that sense, failing to find a winner against Sligo Rovers.

Still, none of McClean’s sides were beaten this weekend and the Wrexham man will be pretty pleased with football has treated him in the last few days.

The attention will turn back to Wrexham soon enough though with McClean and co gearing up for an important summer ahead of League One life.
