Head of the Nikolić agricultural farm in Serbia’s village of Despotovo, Slavoljub Nikolić, has proactively secured his farm’s future by signing a comprehensive agricultural insurance policy with Dunav osiguranje. The policy covers onions, potatoes, and field crops across 120 hectares, ensuring his long-term investments are protected “just in case.”
“I am aware of the risks that weather catastrophes can cause and, since I have learned from last year’s negative experience when hail caused total damage to about 30 hectares of onions,” – said Nikolić. “This year I insured my agricultural goods just in case,” he added urging everyone engaged in agricultural production to do the same.

The Nikolić farm produces over six thousand tons of potatoes and onions annually, exporting its produce across the Balkans. With more than 250 hectares under cultivation, the farm is a significant player in the region’s agricultural sector. In 2023, Slavoljub Nikolić was honored with the “Best Farmer” award in the vegetable farming category, a testament to his dedication and quality work.
“I uphold traditional agricultural methods with significant support from my family,” Nikolić emphasized. He expressed hope that his son Miroslav will continue the family legacy, maintaining the path carefully paved by his ancestors over the decades.

The severe damage from last year’s supercell storm has heightened awareness among Serbian farmers about the importance of crop insurance. This year, there has been a marked increase in the demand for comprehensive coverage from Dunav osiguranje.
Nataša Novčić, Head of Branch 2 at Dunav osiguranje Novi Sad, highlighted the variety of risks covered by their agricultural insurance. “We offer protection against fire, lightning, and hail, which are the most common risks. This year, we’ve seen a significant rise in interest for storm risk coverage, which is understandable,” Novčić noted. She added that the company also provides coverage for flood, frost, and allied perils.
