‘You do not’: Martin Brundle left absolutely stunned by 423-point star's decision-making during the Monaco GP

The Monaco Grand Prix won’t be remembered by many Formula 1 fans as a classic after the first lap of the race.

There were plenty of incidents before the cars even reached the start/finish line with the red flag waving following a huge crash involving Sergio Perez.

Martin Brundle was commentating on the race for Sky Sports F1 and was left perplexed by the decision-making of another driver on the grid.

Overtaking moves were few and far between on the streets of Monte Carlo and they’re never easy to pull off.

Brundle wasn’t impressed by what he saw from Alpine driver Esteban Ocon at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Just moments before the race was suspended following the huge crash coming out of turn one, the 423-point driver brought his involvement in the Grand Prix to a premature end.

Martin Brundle unimpressed with Esteban Ocon’s move on Pierre Gasly at the Monaco Grand Prix

The Monaco Grand Prix is notorious for the amount of concentration needed from drivers to reach the chequered flag unscathed.

Charles Leclerc did a fantastic job leading the race from Oscar Piastri, Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris for 78 laps.

The red flag allowed all four drivers to change their tyres and with the jeopardy of any strategy call removed, it was a procession from start to finish.

However, the first lap is arguably the best chance a driver has to make a move, even if Kevin Magnussen didn’t quite his move on Perez right.

The other move that caused a retirement at Monaco was Esteban Ocon’s poorly-judged move on Pierre Gasly and Brundle couldn’t understand what he was doing.

Heading into the right-hand corner before the tunnel, Gasly was slightly out of shape having tried to get past Alex Albon and Ocon spotted a gap down the inside.

Unfortunately, Gasly had nowhere to go and turned in on his teammate, sending him flying into the air and doing enough damage to his car to prevent him from joining the restart.

It’s safe to say that Alpine team principal Bruno Famin was unimpressed with what he saw.

Martin Brundle gives his verdict on Esteban Ocon incident

Watching the incident for the first time, Brundle said: “As we see the two Alpines, oh and there’s another incident there then as two Alpines get into each other!

“[Pierre] Gasly’s been wrong-footed hasn’t he?”

Croft added: “[Alex] Albon just ahead of Gasly here and [Esteban] Ocon on the inside getting sent airborne.”

Brundle explained: “You don’t lunge your teammate at Portier. You do not lunge your teammate in Portier on the first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix.”

On the team radio, Gasly bemoaned: “What did he do? What did he do? Why did he try to attack me? Oh my gosh. The whole car is damaged now!”

Ocon picked up a ten-second penalty which couldn’t be carried out during the race so he will receive a five-place grid drop at the next race in Canada.

Bruno Famin absolutely furious with Esteban Ocon incident

Brundle couldn’t believe Ocon tried to make such a risky move on his teammate on a narrow Monaco circuit and team principal Bruno Famin certainly agreed.

Speaking after the accident, the 62-year-old said to Canal+: “It’s sad to see this kind of incident.

“It’s exactly what we didn’t want to see. Esteban’s attack was totally out of circumstances.

“It was exactly what we didn’t want to see and we’re going to draw the consequences. We’re going to make a tough decision.

“If we were fighting for a podium finish at the end of the race, why not, and still… But there, on the first lap, at Le Portier, frankly, it wasn’t the place to make an attack, leaving zero room for his teammate.”

Ocon tweeted after the incident and said: “Today’s incident was my fault, the gap was too small in the end and I apologise to the team on this one.

“Hoping for a deserved points-finish for the team today.”

All eyes will now be on what ‘tough decision’ Famin is referring to ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix.

With the likes of Jack Doohan, Victor Martins and even Mick Schumacher waiting for an opportunity at Alpine, it’ll be fascinating to see what happens next at the French manufacturer.
