Report: 'Special' Manchester City gem could now seal loan move to UCL club for 2024/25

One of Manchester City’s top young talents could make a loan move to a Champions League club next season.

City have a number of exciting youngsters on the books at the moment, many of whom are hopeful of turning out for the first-team someday.

The likes of Phil Foden, Rico Lewis and Oscar Bobb have paved the way at City, and fans would love nothing more than to see another academy graduate make an impact under Pep Guardiola.

A number of talented City youngsters spent 2023/24 away from the club in bids to further their development.

One man who had a decent campaign on a personal note in a struggling team was James McAtee, who is now being lined up for another loan move – to a Champions League club…

It has been reported this morning by journalist Alan Nixon that James McAtee could potentially be making a move to Girona this summer.

McAtee spent last season on loan at Sheffield United, who finished rock-bottom of the Premier League table, accruing just 16 points from their 38 games.

McAtee made 32 appearances across all competitions for the Blades, scoring five goals and making four assists across all competitions.

It was McAtee’s second spell at Bramall Lane having been with them for the 2022/23 season in the Championship. A third stint is probably unlikely, given McAtee has now proven himself in the top-flight.

Journalist Alan Nixon has reported interest from at least two clubs via his Patreon this morning. Girona are thought to be keen, after they sealed qualification for the Champions League.

Leicester City, who are managed by former City coach Enzo Maresca, are also interested following their promotion back to the Premier League.

Before any decision is made though, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is likely going to want to take a closer look at the player in pre-season.

Two great options for McAtee

It will be very intriguing to see what happens with McAtee – who’s previously been called ‘special’ by Pep – this summer.

Sheffield United really struggled in 2023/24 and it was a bit of a shame that City’s gem couldn’t experience that winning feeling a little more.

But a move to one of Girona or Leicester next season could be great for his development.

Girona – who are owned by the City Football Group, of course – have obviously sealed Champions League football for next season and that would certainly be a good experience for McAtee. Playing under Michel in that team could really suit him.

And working under Maresca at Leicester could also be good for him.
