N.J. boy, 4, drowns in residential pool Saturday night

A 4-year-old boy drowned in a pool in North Brunswick on Saturday night, authorities said.

Police got a 911 call at 7:46 p.m., on Saturday, reporting that the boy had been found in “a residential pool” and wasn’t breathing, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and North Brunswick Police Chief Joseph Battaglia announced Sunday.

CPR was performed on the boy, who was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in neighboring New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead.

“Our hearts are heavy with this tragic loss,” Ciccone and Battaglia said in a joint statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family during this incredibly difficult time. We also urge everyone to ensure the safety of all children when near water.”

The announcement did not provide the street name or address where the drowning occurred, what kind of residence it was and whether the boy lived there, or describe the circumstances surrounding the drowning. A spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Officials said the incident was being investigated by Det. John Hanrahan of the North Brunswick Police, at 732-247-0922, and Det. Michelle Coppola of the prosecutor’s office, at 732 745-3477.

Officials provided a link to pool and bath child safety guidelines published by the Red Cross.
