‘That’s promising’: Max Verstappen shares what ‘the only positive’ was for Red Bull after tough Monaco GP

Red Bull Racing star Max Verstappen wasn’t pleased when he crossed the chequered flag at the end of the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Dutch driver came home in 6 place, his worst finish on the season aside from this retirement at the Australian Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen was interviewed on Sky Sports F1 at the end of the race and struggled to find many positive things to say about the Monaco Grand Prix.

He made it clear over the team radio midway through the race that he wasn’t being pushed by Lewis Hamilton behind him and wasn’t closing up to George Russell ahead of him.

He was one of the only drivers to change his tyres during the race, meaning he at least had a change of scenery for one lap of the Grand Prix.

However, Verstappen has now explained that Red Bull at least learned something during the race that might help them in Canada.

Max Verstappen explains what the only positive was from the Monaco Grand Prix

The signs that things weren’t going to go all Red Bull’s way in Monaco were clear from the first practice session.

Ferrari and McLaren have closed the gap to Red Bull in recent weeks and the layout of the circuit didn’t particularly suit Verstappen or Sergio Perez.

However, as was the case in Imola, the difference in quality between the two teammates was obvious to see once it came down to the pressure situation.

Perez failed to get out of Q1, meaning he started towards the back of the grid.

That ended up being his downfall, clashing with Kevin Magnussen and being taken out before reaching the third corner of the race and taking Nico Hulkenberg with him.

Max Verstappen fared better in qualifying in Monaco but could only find one positive from the race itself after coming home where he started in 6.

Red Bull with work to do before the Canadian Grand Prix

Asked to assess his weekend as a whole, Verstappen said: “I mean, it’s still not probably going to be the easiest weekend because of the curbing and stuff, our car’s just not very good at that.

“They resurfaced the track so that might actually bring some unexpected stuff, you never the grip levels.

“This has been a really tricky, challenging weekend for us, at the end also damage, a lot of damage with Checo’s [Perez] car.

“Overall, probably a weekend to forget but also a lot to learn from.

“So, the only positive that comes out of this weekend is that we understand what our big weakness is and that’s what we really have to work on because I think if we can solve that or at least make it, let’s say decent, we immediately gain a lot of lap time and that’s promising but we have to do it.”

Max Verstappen’s already lost as many race victories as 2023

It’s far from ideal for Verstappen to suggest that the only positive for Red Bull coming away from Monaco is that they’ve identified a problem with the car.

If Red Bull can fix their curb-riding issues and find some extra time, it would give them a healthy advantage over Ferrari and McLaren.

However, the last three race weekends have proved that the current Constructors Champions are vulnerable.

Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc have taken advantage by earning their first wins of the season.

Verstappen will want to make sure this new trend of sharing victories with the rest of the grid ends sooner rather than later.
