Tottenham Hotspur hold talks to sign £60m Chelsea target but Euro 2024 presents problem

Tottenham Hotspur will be eyeing new signings for this summer and Ange Postecoglou may be keen to bring in a new midfielder or two.

Tottenham return to European action next season having secured qualification for the Europa League.

That is a decent season for Tottenham, especially after losing Harry Kane, but Ange Postecoglou wants much, much more.

Around 15 names have been linked with departures from Tottenham this summer as Postecoglou looks to shape his squad.

Spurs will be looking at all areas of the squad but midfield could be a real focus with Tottenham’s engine room looking a little off-colour in the final stages of the season.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Yves Bissouma are far from safe right now and whilst a holding midfielder could be a focus, adding another creative player to compete with James Maddison – and possibly replace Giovani Lo Celso – could be a priority.

Tottenham Hotspur hold Heorhiy Sudakov talks

One name Tottenham have been linked with in recent weeks is Shakhtar Donetsk playmaker Heorhiy Sudakov.

Reports in April claimed that Tottenham had met with Sudakov’s agent with Vadim Shablii posting a photo from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Shakhtar allegedly want around £34million for Sudakov having turned down £34million from Napoli in January.

The Express now back up that Tottenham have held talks over a deal for Sudakov, but so have London rivals Chelsea.

There is a problem on the horizon though – and that is Euro 2024.

Ukraine take on Romania, Slovakia and Belgium this summer and Sudakov is not only expected to be called up, but likely to be a key player.

Shakhtar are now believe to be waiting on a sale in the hope that Sudakov shines in Germany this summer and the market for his signature grows.

That could allow Shakhtar to demand a huge price tag, similar to the one which saw Chelsea sign Mykhailo Mudryk in January 2023.

Tottenham were going to have to dig deep anyway but with Shakhtar potentially ready to hike the asking price up this summer, Spurs could yet be priced out.

Sudakov has compared himself to James Maddison

Sudakov has been vital for Shakhtar this season, racking up 10 goals and six assists in 34 appearances.

The 21-year-old predominantly plays as an attacking midfielder but has also operated in from the left flank at times.

Sudakov is certainly a big talent for the future and Tottenham may well view him as the ideal competition for Maddison moving forward.

The likeness goes even further as Sudakov, speaking in 2023, compared himself to Maddison as well as Manchester City superstar Phil Foden.

That is bold talk from Sudakov, who only bagged six goals and four assists in Ukraine’s top flight.

That isn’t a terrible record by any means, but the jump from Ukrainian football to the Premier League is a huge one – as Mudryk has found.

Tottenham must be wary of overspending on Sudakov and if the price reaches Mudryk levels, we couldn’t blame Spurs for walking away.
