The 2024 SEC Baseball Tournament Championship is taking place on Sunday in Hoover, Alabama. The top-seeded Tennessee Volunteers are taking on the 11th seeded LSU Tigers for the coveted SEC Tourney crown. Tennessee has jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, thanks to a three-run blast from Billy Amick. And in the top of the fourth, ESPN’s Kris Budden spoke with Vols head coach Tony Vitello about how good it was to see Amick hit one out of the park.

“It’s just good to see him smile, you know. It’s kind of like barbed wire. The more you start getting frustrated with it, the more you get entangled. And he knows how important he is to us and he wants to do well. Yeah, he was pressing a little bit. But it’s great for the whole team to see him smile here,” Vitello explained.

The Vols got another inning out of pitcher A.J. Russell, before he was replaced by Dylan Loy. What did he see out of him and what does Russell give the Vols when he’s healthy? “Just outs over the course of the week. It’s like today. Both teams are trying to scheme and how can you get to 27 or if you require more what’s the asterisk for the whole thing. So, for him to just give us three outs is even more. Because it could just be two outs. We’ve done okay without him, but he certainly adds to the mix,” Vitello continued.

How has freshman pitcher Dylan Loy impressed him so far? “Just that he’s under control. He gets fired up. And so, it’s a good combination. [Chris] Stamos is like that too. You’ve gotta have a good combination I guess of being intense. But at the same time, being under control. You know, it’s good for him to be out there and experience it because he’s gonna be a valuable pitcher for us,” Vitello finished.
