Liverpool scouts went to watch Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners but ended up being impressed by his teammate instead

Liverpool continue to be linked with a move for Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.

The Reds are rumoured to have held Koopmeiners in high regard even before his move to Atalanta in 2022.

But with the Dutch midfielder taking things up a level in Italy this season, Liverpool are reportedly keeping a closer watch on him than ever before.

Despite interest from Anfield though, it has been claimed that Koopmeiners is more likely to end up at Juventus next season.

Although perhaps disappointing, Liverpool seemingly won’t be too down-heartened by that. That’s because while they’ve had their eye on Koopmeiners, the Reds have reportedly become infatuated with one of his Atalanta teammates, too.

Liverpool ready to move for Atalanta’s Ederson

Koopmeiners has always felt like an unlikely signing for Liverpool. Although he’s obviously a very good player, he’ll turn 27 during next season. In FSG terms, that’s too old for a big signing.

With a £60m price-tag on his head, the Netherlands international feels like he’s slipped out of range for Liverpoool.

However, according to Italian outlet Tuttosport, that hasn’t stopped the Reds from checking in on him this season. Liverpool’s scouts are said to have regularly been watching Atalanta, with Koopmeiners their main focus.

Interestingly though, while the 26-year-old was initially claimed to be their reason for watching, fellow midfielder Ederson has reportedly ‘bewitched’ Liverpool in the process.

The Reds are now said to have switched their attention to the Brazilian, and are ‘planning an assault’ to sign him this summer.

This could reportedly be good news for Juventus, who would then have a clear run at Koopmeiners.

Why Liverpool want Ederson

Ederson has been catching the eye all season for Atalanta. In Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, the 24-year-old is very much the engine room.

In need of a physical midfielder like Ederson, it was no surprise to see Liverpool linked with him earlier in the season.

Then, the former Salernitana midfielder put in a superb performance in the Europa League final. If the Reds weren’t impressed before, then they should have been after what Ederson did in Dublin.

Recently called up for Brazil’s Copa America squad, Liverpool will no doubt be casting an eye on how Ederson gets on over the summer tournament.

Perhaps it’s time for agent Alisson Becker to be deployed as the Reds looks to snare another South American talent.
