'The big difference': Rohl explains what he had to change as Sheffield Wednesday boss compared to Germany role

Danny Rohl has explained what he had to change when leaving the German national team to join Sheffield Wednesday.

Danny Rohl hadn’t been in management until he arrived at Sheffield Wednesday, having spent time on the coaching staff with RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and Germany.

The 35-year-old most recently spent over two years as Germany’s assistant coach, working alongside Hansi Flick.

After Flick was sacked by Germany, Rohl then decided to take the leap into management and was given one of the most difficult tasks in English football.

Rohl was very quickly adored by Sheffield Wednesday fans and went onto do what seemed impossible – avoided relegation.

The German has now put pen to paper on a new contract after a number of clubs declared interest in him, eager to snap up the young coach who hasn’t even been in management for a year yet.

Danny Rohl explains ‘big difference’ between management and coaching

Despite his success so far, Rohl has admitted that he did have to get used to some ‘big’ differences when transitioning from being an assistant coach.

Speaking to sport.de, Rohl said: “This is the big difference between assistant trainer and boss.

“As head coach, you still have to stand in front of the team after very bitter games and spread optimism, even if it doesn’t feel like it for yourself and you are totally depressed yourself.

“As an assistant trainer, you just squat into the cabin and listen to what the boss says.”

The German still has so much to deliver

While it seems like being an assistant coach would be a much simpler job for Danny Rohl, he certainly seems like he was made to be at the very top.

The German is clearly a brilliant coach and that is very visible in the team’s displays, but he is also an excellent leader and has shown he has no fear – despite only being at the club for a matter of months.

It is easy to forget that he is still only 35 years old and is learning on the job as he goes, which is unbelievable given how successful he has been so far.

Rohl still has so far to go and Wednesday are going to be the club to reap the rewards of that. It’s an incredibly exciting time to be at Hillsborough, and Rohl should also be very excited about his future in management.
