NASCAR made the decision to call Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway after just 249 laps due to unsuccessful track drying efforts following a rainstorm.
The move was highly unpopular among both fans watching at home and those who gutted out the conditions at Charlotte. The decision wasn’t much more well received by the drivers themselves, with one of NASCAR’s premier events getting cut short.
And with next Sunday’s race taking place at World Wide Technology Raceway, Carson Hocevar is already getting a jump on the weather forecast in St. Louis. Perhaps NASCAR should go ahead and call the race six days out, Hocevar said on X.
Of course, NASCAR did have their reasons for cutting the Coca-Cola 600 short. The sanctioning body claimed the humidity was keeping them from restarting the race before 1 a.m. ET.
As the leader at the time NASCAR brought the cars down to pit road before the rain began to fall, Christopher Bell was awarded the checkered flag, his second victory of the season.
“It feels so good,” Bell said after the race. “And really, the last two Coca-Cola 600s I felt like we’ve had the potential to go to victory lane and both times we haven’t been able to do it. So, to come back in 2024 — and we’ve really been in a slump the last couple of weeks — so to come out here and have a banner day — it’s such a high profile, prestigious event — is really big for us.”
Rain-filled day ruins Kyle Larson’s Indy-Charlotte Double hopes
The rain-shortened Coca-Cola 600 capped off an overall disappointing “Greatest Day in Motorsports.” As it did in Charlotte, storms impacted the 108th Running of the Indy 500. The race started at 4:45 p.m. instead of 12:45 p.m., ruining Kyle Larson’s chances at attempting the Indy-Charlotte Double. Ultimately, Larson did make it to Charlotte with 151 laps to go, but never got a chance to run a single lap before the race was called.
As you could imagine, Larson was heartbroken at a day of promise turned upside down.
“I don’t know. I’m very, very thankful for the experience, obviously,” Larson told Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports after leaving Charlotte. “Everything about the two weeks and all that was great until today, so just uh, sad. … Yeah, it’s just sad. Everything that could have went wrong today, went wrong. So, hopefully, hopefully get to do it again in the future and hopefully weather is better next time.”
