‘Very impressed’: 450-point F1 team boss says it would be a ‘mistake’ not to consider Mick Schumacher for 2025

There are a lot of drivers trying to break onto the Formula 1 grid ahead of the 2025 season including German star Mick Schumacher.

Plenty of rookies such as Kimi Antonelli, Oliver Bearman and Liam Lawson are hoping to be given their first full-time contract but Mick Schumacher already has two full seasons under his belt.

He spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons with Haas under Guenther Steiner but managed to score just 12 points during those two campaigns.

His spell with the American manufacturer appears to have had an impact on Gene Haas who is reluctant to hire Oliver Bearman as a result.

Alpine team principal Bruno Famin has spoken to Sky Sport DE about the prospect of hiring Mick Schumacher and has admitted it would be a mistake to rule out hiring the 25-year-old.

Given the events that took place at the Monaco Grand Prix, Schumacher might be pushing even harder to prove he deserves a race seat with the French manufacturer next year.

Alpine boss Bruno Famin says it would be a ‘mistake’ to rule out Mick Schumacher

A red flag during the first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix is normally welcomed by teams as it allows them to make their required tyre change and run for the rest of the race without worrying about losing track position.

It’s exactly what both Ferrari and McLaren drivers did and Charles Leclerc took full advantage to finally win his home race for the first time.

Unfortunately for Alpine, they were seconds away from benefitting from that stoppage before disaster struck.

Pierre Gasly had reached Q3 for the first time this season and Esteban Ocon started the race just behind him.

Ocon spotted an opportunity to dive down the inside of Gasly at Portier but misjudged his move and was sent flying into the air by his teammate’s front-right wheel.

Famin was furious that Ocon had ruined his race and nearly compromised Gasly’s and Martin Brundle was confused by his decision-making at the time.

Mick Schumacher may be putting himself in the frame to race for Alpine next season and Famin believes it would be a mistake to rule him out.

Despite being a Mercedes reserve driver, Schumacher is racing for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship this year.

Given that Gasly and Ocon are both out of contract at the end of the year, he could be a prime candidate to fill one of those two seats.

Bruno Famin address the possibility of signing Mick Schumacher for Alpine

The boss of the team who scored 450 points in their F1 history said to Sky Germany: “I’m very happy with Mick [Schumacher], he’s super-fast.

“But that’s not the main thing in the WEC, you have to drive at a consistently high level and have a good team spirit.

“I’m very impressed with him because he adapted his attitude to the long-distance races from day one. He has a very good relationship with his teammates.

“Everything is open for 2025, everyone talks to everyone. It would be a mistake not to have Mick on the list.”

What could Alpine’s driver line-up look like for 2025?

It’s looking less and less likely that Esteban Ocon will be driving for Alpine next season.

His mistake in Monaco has left him in Bruno Famin’s bad books which could be just what Schumacher needs to get back on the grid.

Ocon has been linked with a move to Haas and his manager Toto Wolff could also try and place him at Williams next year.

Pierre Gasly is more likely to stay at Alpine next season but will be out of contract at the end of the year.

Famin was spotted speaking to Jack Doohan after Sunday’s race and the reserve driver has a chance of earning a call-up as well.

The joys of the Formula 1 driver’s market this year mean anything could happen and as the Oscar Piastri saga in 2022 proved, even an official announcement might not necessarily be official.
