Report: Which club is now favourite to sign Tosin Adarabioyo after fresh offer - Newcastle or Chelsea

Newcastle United thought they were on the brink of two early summer signings, but that is now in doubt.

It has looked certain for a while that Lloyd Kelly will be moving to Newcastle United, and that deal has edged towards completion since the Premier League season came to an end.

There is also hope that he will be joined at St James’ Park by Tosin Adarabioyo, who is also due to become a free agent. Newcastle United have been closing in on that deal, with the club eager to conclude negotiations before the 2024 FA Cup final.

That did not happen, and now the 26-year-old defender has another option. Chelsea have also been admirers of Tosin, and have now made him a contract offer.

It will now be up to Tosin, who also continues to attract interest from Manchester United.

Chelsea rivalling Newcastle United to sign Tosin Adarabioyo

It could lead to a situation where Newcastle miss out on a player they were confident of signing, but an update from the Daily Mail suggests that it is still the Magpies that are in the driving seat.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are still the favourites to sign Tosin on a free transfer, despite him receiving a contract offer from Chelsea.

They report that Chelsea believe Tosin represents incredible value, while he would also add to their homegrown quota of players.

Despite this, the Daily Mail believe that Newcastle are still hoping to get this move over the line, with Eddie Howe’s side remaining in pole position.

Why Tosin should pick Newcastle over Chelsea

A move to Chelsea would give Tosin something he can’t get at Newcastle – European football. The Blues are going to be in the Conference League, while the Magpies have missed out due to Man United winning the FA Cup.

However, Tosin will get stability at St James’ Park. It is very clear where the club is going right now, with Howe leading the charge. It has been reported that Tosin is keen to work with Howe, and it is easy to understand why given his track record of improving players.

In contrast, Tosin does not know who he will be working for at Chelsea. They have parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino, and currently look likely to replace him with Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca.

But given the way things are at Chelsea, how long will that last? Moving to Stamford Bridge would offer Tosin no guarantees, other than the fact he would not have to relocate from the capital.

Whether that is enough to convince him to join the Londoners remains to be seen, but Newcastle will be hopeful that they can fend off this interest from Chelsea and quickly conclude what will be an important deal.
