Gary Neville asked Wayne Rooney who his best manager ever was, he didn't even hesitate to answer

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has been asked who his best-ever manager was and with a few to choose from, he didn’t even hesitate.

Wayne Rooney has been prominent in the media lately, featuring as a pundit for various channels including TNT Sports, BBC and Sky Sports.

He has also been a host on the Stick to Football podcast recently but has now taken up a new role within football as manager of Plymouth Argyle.

But before he gets into that, he’ll be covering the Euros this summer as a pundit and has just appeared on The Overlap to be grilled by Gary Neville.

One of the things he was grilled over was who the best manager he’s ever had at Manchester United is.

Wayne Rooney shares who his best-ever manager was

Appearing on The Overlap with Neville, Rooney was asked 53 quickfire questions, some of which led to some incredible stories.

But one question is particularly interesting as Rooney was quizzed over who the best manager he’s played under was.

Neville posed the question, “Best manager you’ve ever played under”, to which Rooney barely hesitated with his response.

“Alex Ferguson”, the legendary United forward answered.

“I think… It’s funny because when you stop playing and obviously when you go into management as well, you look back at different managers and different things they do, and I remember I used to think, ‘Why is he not coaching all the time’ and stuff like that and you see the trust he had with his other coaches.

“His man-management with everyone was incredible and obviously we had a bit of a falling out as well but I think that’s part of football, we all want the best and he was certainly the best.”

Singling out Sir Alex Ferguson‘s man management shows that Rooney understands him perfectly and if he’s wise, he’ll use that in his management career.

Rooney has changed his tune after previously picking another Manchester United boss

While Rooney has chosen Sir Alex, this is a change from an answer he gave in February to the same question, although he explained their qualities as being different.

Previously Rooney chose Louis van Gaal as the best manager he’s had at United although there’s a difference.

On Van Gaal, Rooney explained that the Dutchman was tactically the best he’d played under at United.

This is different to what he’s now said about Sir Alex who he praised the man management of but perhaps wasn’t as open with his tactics as Van Gaal.

This is something which has long been thought of, as lots of players who played under Sir Alex have admitted they weren’t aware of the style of play.
