Tottenham Hotspur hope to spark bidding war for ‘magnificent’ player with talks underway

Tottenham Hotspur are set to enter a crucial stage of the Ange Postecoglou era as he approaches his third transfer window in the job.

Tottenham fans will have European action to look forward to next season with Postecoglou securing a fifth-place finish and subsequent Europa League qualification.

Postecoglou will now hope to seriously bolster his Tottenham squad with a number of signings needed this summer.

Spurs will ultimately have to sell players in order to make that happen though, and Postecoglou has already outlined his plans to alter the squad.

Reports suggest that up to 15 players could be moved on with Tottenham no doubt looking to cash in on a raft of loaned-out players who simply have no future at the club.

The likes of Sergio Reguilon, Djed Spence, Joe Rodon and Tanguy Ndombele spring to mind, but some fringe first-team players could go too.

Tottenham Hotspur want Giovani Lo Celso bidding war

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is one player surely primed for the exit this summer and fellow midfielder Giovani Lo Celso fits a similar bill.

We are now approaching five years since Lo Celso arrived at Tottenham from Real Betis, initially on loan before the move was turned permanent.

The truth is that Lo Celso just hasn’t lived up to expectations in a Tottenham shirt and the time for him to leave has surely come.

The Mirror (26/05, p74) report that Betis now want to re-sign Lo Celso after allowing him to join Tottenham in 2019.

It’s stated that Betis have already held ‘exploratory talks’ about a potential deal to bring Lo Celso back to Andalusia.

The problem for Betis is that Tottenham are ‘keen’ to instigate a bidding war for Lo Celso with other clubs interested.

Villarreal want Lo Celso again having taken him on loan for 18 months between January 2022 and the summer of 2023.

AC Milan and Barcelona are keen too, meaning Tottenham are seeing four interested clubs and want to play them all against each other in pursuit of a decent fee.

Once hailed as a ‘magnificent’ player by Sevilla vice-president Jose Castro, Lo Celso could be a crucial sale as Tottenham attempt to retool under Postecoglou.

Time for Lo Celso to leave

The summer window of 2019 felt like a step in the right direction after the Champions League final defeat.

Tottenham had been dormant in the transfer window from the end of January 2018 to the summer of 2019, an unprecedented quiet spell for any club in the modern game.

In came Lo Celso, Ndombele and Ryan Sessegnon, three signings who were supposed to take Tottenham forward.

In truth, none of them have lived up to expectations.

Sessegnon’s career has been blighted by injuries and both Ndombele and Lo Celso have struggled to live up to the hype.

Lo Celso returned to Spurs last summer but only started four Premier League games, failing to really get his Tottenham career back on track under Postecoglou.

Now 28, Lo Celso just isn’t going to have a key role going forward and it’s time for him to move on and seek opportunities elsewhere whilst adding to Tottenham’s transfer kitty.
