Justice Juan Merchan lashed out at Todd Blanche, Donald Trump's attorney, for making an "outrageous" and "highly inappropriate" statement during his closing remarks.

As Blanche was finishing his summation in Trump's hush money trial on Tuesday, he told the jury they shouldn't be "sending a man to prison."

The prosecution quickly objected, and the judge sustained it.

After the jury was dismissed from the courtroom, the prosecution asked for the judge to instruct the jurors to disregard Blanche's remark.

"I think that was outrageous, Mr Blanche," Merchan said, according to Harry Litman. "Someone who has been a prosecutor as long as you [should] know. It's hard for me to imagine how that was accidental in any way."

Merchan asked the prosecution to draft a statement for the jury.
