Five goals in 51 games: How Ilkay Gundogan fared in first Barcelona season after Man City exit

Ilkay Gundogan has now completed his first season at Barcelona after leaving Manchester City.

After captaining the Blues to their historic Treble last season, the midfielder brought an end to his seven-year spell at the Manchester club to join Barcelona as a free agent rather than sign a new contract with the Citizens.

During his time with City, the German featured in 304 games across all competitions, scoring 60 goals and delivering 38 assists along the way.

Now that his debut season in Spain has drawn to a close, let’s take an in-depth look at how the 33-year-old has fared.

Gundogan featured in all but two of Barcelona’s games this season across all competitions, starting 45 of the 51 games he appeared in.

Across those games, the midfielder scored five goals and delivered 14 assists.

This shows that the former City star is now undeniably a key figure for the Spanish side.

With 36 La Liga games under his belt, the Germany international made more key passes (97), shot-creating actions (166) and recoveries (189) than any other player at the club.

This highlights how useful he’s been in terms of creating chances and winning the ball back for his side.

His overall performances in La Liga earned the former City captain a strong season rating of 7.15/10 from WhoScored, making him the second-highest-rated player at Barcelona behind Robert Lewandowski (7.2/10).

Even though Gundogan couldn’t get his hands on any silverware with the Spanish side, it’s clear that he has still been a massively important player for them.

Should City have done more to keep hold of Gundogan

Taking into account how impressive the 33-year-old has been at his new side this season, it begs the question most City fans may have asked over the past year or so regarding why the Manchester club let Gundogan run his contract down and leave as a free agent.

Either way, we feel glad that the former City star has shown everyone in Spain how good he is, even though he’s had his first trophyless season since his debut season with the Citizens.
