Jurgen Klopp makes point about Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Liverpool at goodbye event

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool farewell tour continued on Tuesday as he appeared at the M&S Bank Arena.

Klopp was featuring on stage alongside the likes of comedian John Bishop as part of an audience in front of Liverpool fans.

It was Jurgen’s last scheduled goodbye after the party that transpired at Anfield on the final day of the season.

After Tuesday, that really is it for the Legendary manager. The next time we see him, Arne Slot is likely to have started work at the AXA Training Centre.

As a result, Klopp was perhaps a little more loose-lipped than he has been at times. And with that came an interesting comment about some superstars of the modern game.

Jurgen Klopp makes Kylian Mbappe point

Throughout Klopp’s tenure, Liverpool were heavily linked with a potential move for Kylian Mbappe.

With the Frenchman leaving PSG this summer, there was plenty of chatter that he could end up at Anfield. However, it always felt unlikely to happen, with Mbappe’s heart set on moving to Real Madrid.

There were also rumours that Erling Haaland could join back in 2022, while Jude Bellingham was a very active target who ultimately headed to Madrid, too.

Missing out on those three names will not have been a surprise to any Liverpool supporter. Nevertheless, it would have been nice to see the Reds make a real statement signing.

The reason for them not doing so is often put down to an unwillingness to spend from owners FSG. But speaking in a video posted on X by a Liverpool supporter on Tuesday, Klopp defended the Americans.

“If Liverpool would be the club with endless money, you can spend what you want,” began the 56-year-old. “Kylian Mbappe comes here, Bellingham comes here, Haaland comes here. It doesn’t fit, it’s not us. It is not us. That’s how it is.”

Is Jurgen Klopp right about Liverpool’s spending?

It is true that Liverpool spent significantly less than their rivals during Klopp’s time at the club. Let alone behemoths like Real Madrid, for example.

And yet, the Reds were still marvellously successful in that period. They didn’t need the big names.

Obviously, it would have been amazing to see any one of the three players Klopp mentions arrive to supplement the squad.

But there’s no saying that they all would have been hits. Mbappe in particular is a player who appears to needs a lot of special treatment. We don’t need those egos in the team.

As a result, we’re absolutely fine with Liverpool not breaking the bank – and their model – to sign these players. Others may disagree, but we think success earned in a different way is much more satisfying. Jurgen gets it.
