'We will obviously try...': President admits he's now ready to cash in on £10m player linked with Wolves

Wolves’ luck could be in over one transfer target, with a club president today opening the door for his summer sale.

Gary O’Neil and many of his players have jetted off on holiday after a long season, which culminated in a 14th-placed finish in the Premier League.

It was a decent campaign overall, with many people tipping Wolves to really struggle at the start of the campaign. In the end, Wolves achieved what they set out to do, which was stay in the Premier League.

That said, there is frustration for some with the way Wolves finished the season.

O’Neil is hoping for a big summer, having dropped a few messages publicly over the last few months.

One player Wolves have been linked with is Las Palmas goalkeeper Alvaro Valles – and the club’s president is now ready to cash in for the right offer…

There have been a number of reports over the last few months about Wolves having interest in goalkeepers.

Mile Svilar of AS Roma is thought to be of interest. There was also recently a link to Villarreal’s Filip Jorgensen.

It has been suggested that some coaches at Wolves have reservations about Jose Sa’s ball-playing ability and distribution. The Portuguese stopper finished the season in good form though, so O’Neil may want to focus on other positions first.

But should he seek a new goalkeeper, then Valles may well be available. It was reported in April that Wolves had made contact with his representatives and were thinking of making an offer.

On Tuesday lunchtime, Las Palmas president Miguel Ángel Ramírez opened the door to a potential sale of Valles, because the player is not going to sign a new contract at the club and he now only has one year left.

He said (via Las Palmas official X account): “Álvaro Valles we could have sold him in January and we didn’t do it because we valued that what was important was the team.

“He has one season left, UD wanted to renew him and his representative did not want to. Yes, if there is no renewal, we will have to look for an alternative, as of today there is no offer. It is true that the market is long, if an offer arrives we will obviously try to make sure it benefits UD Las Palmas and the boy.”

In 2023/24, Valles featured in all but one of Las Palmas’ La Liga matches, serving a one-game suspension against Barcelona. He kept nine clean sheets.

There is an issue for Wolves

So it looks like Valles could be on his way out of Las Palmer this summer. As per Estadio Deportivo, the club are looking for just over £10 million to sell.

The publication suggests this is a steep asking price for a player with only one year left. But there is a bigger issue for Wolves, if the club were indeed wanting to swoop.

Apparently, Valles is keen to complete a move to Real Betis, who have also previously shown interest. But there is no offer from them at the moment.

The Spanish outfit aren’t willing to go near that £10 million asking price, and would wait a year to sign him on a free.

Potentially, this stance might allow Wolves the chance to steal in. But you would imagine Valles wouldn’t want to join unless he could play regular minutes.
