'The next step': Liverpool player suggests he's about to end 'crazy' spell and leave Anfield this summer

There’s plenty of change set to come at Liverpool this summer as Arne Slot takes control of the team.

The Reds have become so used to seeing Jurgen Klopp and his group of players in situ at Anfield, but that’s all about to be a thing of the past.

With Slot coming in, it redresses the balance within the Liverpool squad. It’s not quite a fresh start for everybody, but there are some who will be eyeing a more important position in the group.

There are certainly a number of players who perhaps weren’t at the top of the food-chain who could thrive under Slot’s guidance.

For others though, this will be the end of the line. There are a couple of outgoings mooted at Anfield, and one player has now suggested that he could be on the way out.

Caoimhin Kelleher opens up on Liverpool future

Slot shouldn’t be looking to make too many changes straight off the bat at Liverpool.

Klopp has left him a really good squad which can certainly compete. One or two additions in the transfer window will be necessary, but no major surgery is needed.

One department which could see a lot of change mind you is the goalkeeping section.

With long-serving coach John Achterberg leaving and taking assistant Jack Robinson with him, there is already upheaval ongoing.

But according to Caoimhin Kelleher, the two coaches may not be the only ones leaving. Speaking to The Athletic on Wednesday, Kelleher admitted that he’s now looking to be a No.1. Something that is unlikely to happen at Liverpool.

“It would be great if that happened at Liverpool, but I’m not silly,” said the 25-year-old. “I know that Ali [Alisson Becker] has been the best goalkeeper in the world for years.

“I’ve had such an amazing time at Liverpool,” Kelleher adds. “It’s been a crazy journey for me and one that I’ve absolutely loved. I love the club, I love the fans and I have a great relationship with the players and the staff. Whether it’s here at Liverpool or somewhere else, I do feel the next step for me is to be a No 1.”

Liverpool looking for Caoimhin Kelleher replacement

It will be a real shame to see Kelleher leave Liverpool. His level went up several notches this season as he filled in for the injured Alisson.

Since being promoted from the academy in 2019, the Ireland international has been a superb No.2.

Two starting berths in Carabao Cup trophy successes is testament to just how big a part Kelleher has been in the Liverpool squad.

Nevertheless, the time is surely right for him to now move on and be a No.1. He’s ready for it.

From Liverpool’s point of view though, Kelleher will need replacing. It has been claimed that the Reds are already looking into that, enquiring about a number of potential options.

Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow could be one of those. The 26-year-old spoke openly about Liverpool’s interest in him on Tuesday and has been linked with joining back up with Slot.
