Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigations reveals horrifying torture practices in correctional facility

The SBI exposed the system of torture of Ukrainian prisoners

Four officials from Bozhkovska Correctional Colony No. 16 in Poltava Oblast now face charges, the report said.

Nearly all inmates entering the colony fell prey to the criminals. Upon arrival, newcomers endured brutal beatings and threats until compliance with directives was secured. The SBI is also probing reports of fatalities among victims due to these beatings.

Each convicted individual underwent a harsh admission procedure, forced to clean the floor all while being recorded on video. Refusal to comply led to beatings with hands, feet, rubber batons, sticks, and arm twisting. One prisoner endured over 200 strikes, the SBI said.

Personnel from the facility are charged under Article 127, Part 2 (torture) of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment. Investigators are scrutinizing the facility management's involvement in these reprehensible acts.

The SBI is also conducting investigations at the office of the Northeast Inter-regional Department of the State Penitentiary Service and its director. They are delving into allegations of organized extortion and abuse systems, as well as potential corruption schemes. Notably, the director's possession of assets far exceeding his official income – including numerous apartments, offices, and luxury vehicles – is under the bureau's scrutiny.
