Second Rangers transfer update sees £3.2m deal announcement by Ibrox insider

Rangers transfer approach is heading in a new direction and one that Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen will be at the forefront of.

The manager knows that he needs a younger and more robust squad and with players capable of supporting the player trading model pillar.

In Jose Cordoba, Rangers were said to be close to landing their second permanent signing of the summer – but there has been a twist in the tale.

Jose Cordoba to Rangers is off as Nils Koppen pulls the plug

It is never a done deal until there is a picture at Ibrox with a scarf above the head, however, with reports of a medical being completed and a £3.2m fee being agreed, it looked like the Panama international was heading to Glasgow.

Norwich City have been trying to hijack the move but it is still a shock to see that Rangers have pulled out of the deal, according to Chris Jack of the Rangers Review:

“Rangers have ended their interest in defender Jose Cordoba.

“Philippe Clement has now turned his attentions to other centre-back targets.

“Leon Balogun set to sign a new deal.”

Cordoba looked like he had all the fundamentals needed to be a success at Rangers.

Pace and being comfortable on the ball are so important in modern football and even the ageing Leon Balogun is a great example of this.

He might not have the durability that he once had, but the 35-year old veteran still has the speed needed to recover from being out of position or to cover teammates.

Rangers get set to move to next name on the list

There has been no reason given for the plug being pulled on the Cordoba deal.

Koppen and Clement are clearly not interested in entertaining time wasters or agents looking to play one club against another and want to get business done as early as possible.

Cordoba might not be heading to Rangers, however, the fact that he was linked is encouraging.

Our centre-half group is too slow and not physical enough and, if Cordoba is the profile of player Nils Koppen is looking for, then Rangers are heading in the right direction.

He won’t be the last player who is linked with a move to the club who ends up going elsewhere.

Times appear to be changing though, rather than being desperate to land specific targets and paying over the odds, Rangers recruitment chief is simply going to the next name on the list.
