Report: Manchester United want ‘outstanding’ £52m Bundesliga star, but he fancies Barcelona transfer

Manchester United continue to be linked with potential new signings and a transfer fight with Barcelona could be on the horizon this summer.

United’s season is now over and Ineos have plenty to think about.

This campaign was hugely disappointing for United, falling from third place last season to eight place this season.

Erik ten Hag struggled to find the right performance levels and oversaw United crashing out of Europa in the Champions League group stage.

That combination has left Ten Hag under huge pressure but the FA Cup final win over Manchester City has produced fresh support for the Dutchman.

Whether Ineos decide to stick with Ten Hag or bring in a new boss, fans are expecting key signings – and additions in the final third will be vital.

Manchester United face Dani Olmo blow

United already have a top number 10 in Bruno Fernandes as well as the dangerous-on-their-day trio of Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho.

United need to add more quality around those four players though and a creative player who can operate in a number of roles could be ideal.

RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo fits that bill and was linked with a move to United back in March.

The Spain international has a £52million release clause which can be activated this summer and United were interested in such a deal.

Mundo Deportivo in Spain now report that United have ‘shown interest’ in signing Olmo, alongside the likes of Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Manchester City.

Barcelona are also keen though and it’s stated that Olmo would like to join the Catalan giants.

Olmo hails from Terrassa in Catalunya and spent his formative years in the famed La Masia youth ranks.

The 26-year-old was – now rather comically – sent to Dinamo Zagreb in a swap deal for Alen Halilovic back in 2014.

Barcelona thought they were landing the next big thing in Halilovic but Olmo has far exceeded the Croatian’s career.

Barca now want Olmo back and that is his preferred move – but unless they can come up with the £52million, United may still have a chance.

Olmo record at RB Leipzig

Olmo joined RB Leipzig in 2020 having dazzled with Dinamo in Croatia.

The Spain international has now racked up 148 appearances for RB Leipzig, hitting 29 goals and 34 assists in the process.

Whilst number 10 may be his most natural position, Olmo actually spent most of this past season playing as a right-sided winger.

Olmo has also played prominently on the left flank for RB Leipzig, showing his versatility play in a number of midfield roles.

Hailed as an ‘outstanding footballer’ by RB Leipzig boss Marco Rose, Olmo maybe isn’t known for his pace but has outstanding technical ability.

Bruno Fernandes takes on all of the pressure in terms of being United’s chief playmaker but adding another option like Olmo, who could play alongside Fernandes or fill in for him if needed, could be a masterstroke for United.
