Newcastle decide they'll move for £34m goalkeeper if Eddie Howe cannot sign Giorgi Mamardashvili - journalist

Newcastle have now shortlisted a backup option in case Eddie Howe fails to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili.

The Magpies have endured a tough start to the summer after failing in an attempt to hire Dougie Freedman from Crystal Palace as their new Director of Football, while there are also question marks over the future of Bruno Guimaraes.

In the meantime – however – Eddie Howe must focus on incomings, and as talks to sign Giorgi Mamardashvili fail to progress, an alternative has now been found…

Newcastle shortlist Filip Jorgensen as Giorgi Mamardashvili alternative

Spanish journalist Nacho Sanchis now claims that Newcastle have identified Villarreal No.13 Filip Jorgensen in case a move to sign Mamardashvili completely falls apart.

The Valencia No.25 is Howe’s primary goalkeeping target as Newcastle aim to replace Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius this summer.

A separate story by Sanchis recently claimed that Newcastle were considering a £30m bid for Mamardashvili after holding a meeting with Valencia – having already seen a £21m offer rejected.

However, the deal is definitely moving slowly, and it could be argued that Howe is now losing faith in signing the Georgia international, with Jorgensen added to the shortlist.

The Danish glovesman – who Sanchis claims has also been approached by Chelsea and Wolves – enjoyed a strong 2023/24 campaign with six clean sheets in 36 appearances across La Liga.

Sanchis adds that Jorgensen has a €40m (£34m) release clause written into his contract at Villarreal – meaning Newcastle wouldn’t have to negotiate with the Spanish side and could immediately discuss personal terms with the Dane if that amount was offered.

Eddie Howe also wants Alexander Isak backup

Not only is Howe looking to sign competition for Nick Pope, but the 46-year-old is also keen to find a deputy for Alexander Isak.

A story by the Telegraph claims that Newcastle are interested in a deal to sign Everton No.9 Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer, with the Magpies ready to take advantage of financial problems at Goodison Park.
