'Actually makes perfect sense': Danny Murphy says £45m star would be ideal signing for Everton this summer

Danny Murphy believes that Everton have now been linked with a perfect move for the Toffees in the summer transfer window.

It looks set to be another difficult summer for Sean Dyche with speculation persisting over what the future holds for Everton as the potential takeover continues to drag on.

Everton fans have had to get used to their club looking for potential bargains in the transfer market, with Ashley Young joining on a free last year, while Jack Harrison and Arnaut Danjuma signed on loan.

And it appears that the Toffees could utilise the loan market again in the coming months, with Sky Sports reporting this week that they are interested in Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips could leave Manchester City on loan again this summer after a difficult time at West Ham during the second-half of this past season.

In truth, the England international has struggled for two years since joining City for £45 million. So some Everton fans may be concerned about a move, particularly as they will only be able to sign two Premier League players on loan.

But speaking on talkSPORT, Danny Murphy believes that Everton could be the ideal place for the 28-year-old to get his career back on track.

“I don’t know about last chance, but if you were to say to me, pick somebody you think would get the best out of him, Dyche would be someone I’d say,” he said.

“Work in a disciplined structure, get him fit, strong, give him belief and confidence in himself, and actually, makes perfect sense financially, because Everton are going to have to sell a few. If Everton can get half decent money for either Idrissa Gueye or Onana and then bring Phillips in on loan, win-win. Because Phillips is a good footballer, intelligent, he’s got a bit about him, he’s got a bit of everything. He’s alright. Confidence has drained from him.

“The only way really to get your confidence back is by playing, but to play well, you’ve got to be fit. And you’ve got to be given a platform, which is a manager who believes in you. At West Ham, a bad game, he was back out. A bad half, he was back out.

“I’m not blaming Moyes, Moyes was under pressure to get results. So it was maybe not the right move for him. But Sean Dyche has got credit in the bank at Everton; he’s kept them up, he’s had a good season with everything that’s gone on. Yes, they’re going to have to sell a few, but ultimately, I think it would work perfectly. A really good move for him.”

What Jack Harrison previously said about Manchester City star

It is easy to forget just how impressive Phillips was during Leeds’ first year back in the Premier League, with the England international proving to be the fulcrum of Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

Phillips would go on to be named England’s player of the year for 2021 as the Three Lions reached the Euro 2020 final, so it is clear what he could provide if he moved to Goodison Park.

That may potentially lead to a reunion with Jack Harrison. The pair were so important in the years under Bielsa, with Harrison continuing to be one of their best performers up until the Whites were relegated.

Harrison once labelled Phillips ‘unbelievable’, and you would imagine that he would be delighted for Everton if the midfielder ended up signing on loan this summer.
