Boss sacked by Premier League club in 2022 didn't want 'superb' £4.6m player to join Nottingham Forest

Bruno Lage was sacked by Wolves in 2022 and he’s suggested that he didn’t want one of his star players to join Nottingham Forest.

The Reds had a hectic transfer window during the summer of 2022 – with no fewer than 30 new players added to the ranks.

It wasn’t ideal preparation for a first season back in the Premier League for 22 years but Forest did manage to survive.

One of the stellar recruits Forest made was from Wolves, with the Reds breaking their transfer record at the time to sign Morgan Gibbs-White.

However, it was another player that Lage has suggested he didn’t want to lose during the summer of 2022.

Bruno Lage didn’t want Willy Boly to join Nottingham Forest

The central defender signed for Forest shortly after Gibbs-White and he’s become a brilliant addition to the ranks.

Boly has now signed a contract extension and he will spend a third year at the City Ground.

Lage didn’t want him to leave though and felt Wolves allowing him to join Forest wasn’t ideal.

He told theExpress and Star: “Some players were coming to the end of their contracts, though, and we lost important players like Fernando Marcal, Romain Saiss and early in the new season, Willy Boly, Conor Coady and Leander Dendoncker.

“Unfortunately, the club had failed to bring in enough replacements during pre-season. We might have kept some of the ones that left.”

Boly deserved new contract after 2023/24

Although he only made 21 appearances for the Reds last season, the £4.6 million Boly was largely brilliant for Forest.

He wins plenty in the air and he’s also the type of player that has spent the majority of his career playing at the top level.

Furthermore, there is also a relationship with Nuno Espirito Santo now and he clearly values his input highly.

Boly was called ‘superb’ for his performance as Forest beat Sheffield United by Garth Crooks earlier this season.

It’s interesting that Lage has suggested that he’d have liked Wolves to have kept Boly at Molineux for a little while longer.

Boly may be 33 but once again he looks like being an important part of the Forest squad next season.
