'They need to be' - two Man Utd legends saying same thing after FA Cup win as Erik ten Hag is sent clear message

Manchester United legends Eric Cantona and Teddy Sheringham both felt the same way after the Red Devils’ FA Cup triumph at Wembley on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag signed off Manchester United’s turbulent season by leading the Premier League club to a 2-1 win over Manchester City in the final.

Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring for United in the first half before Kobbie Mainoo doubled the Red Devils’ advantage before the second half.

United weathered the attacking threat from City after the break before Jeremy Doku’s long-range strike squeezed past Andre Onana at his near post.

Despite conceding late in the second half, United fended off the attacking threat from City and ensured their victory over the Premier League champions.

Erik ten Hag captured his second piece of major silverware in his second consecutive season at United, with the Dutchman falling short of the FA Cup trophy in 2023.

However, the United boss’ future at Old Trafford still remains shrouded in mystery after the Red Devils finished eighth in the Premier League table.

Cantona on Man Utd’s FA Cup win

Eric Cantona welcomed Manchester United’s FA Cup trophy after Erik ten Hag’s side produced a stunning performance against Manchester City.

However, the 58-year-old United legend insisted that the club “don’t play beautiful football” even when all of their players are fit.

Cantona added that the Red Devils won’t win a league title under Ten Hag if they commit to counter-attacking football for 38 matches in the season.

“I am happy with the FA Cup win. He has done well to win it,” he said, as per The Daily Express.

“But you can’t play counter-attacking football for 38 games and win the league. Even when they have all their players, they still don’t play beautiful football.”

Sheringham makes feelings clear on Man Utd

Teddy Sheringham, much like Cantona, was happy that United were able to end their up-and-down season with major silverware.

However, the former United and England striker was far from convinced with how the Red Devils performed in the Premier League in the 2023-24 season.

United have not won the league title since legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson bowed out of Old Trafford at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Sheringham, who lifted an iconic treble under Sir Alex Ferguson, echoed Cantona’s sentiments that United must be performing at a better level to win the league.

The 58-year-old United legend insisted that the club should be finishing in the “top two or three” and looking to ‘push’ for a league title challenge.

“Well, the people in charge have got to have a look at the situation and ask if that is good enough for Man United,” Sheringham told Sky Sports.

“It’s a fantastic end to the season, no doubt, and fully deserved, and I love the way he’s brushed things off. ‘If Man United don’t want me, I’ll go win trophies elsewhere,’ which is fantastic.

“But at the same time, you look at where they finished. I think it was 13 [league] defeats during the season. It’s not good enough for Manchester United.

“They need to be in the top two or three pushing to win the league, and at the moment they’re nowhere near it. You’ve got to look at that as well.

“Yes, winning trophies is fantastic, but the be-all and end-all of Manchester United is being up there challenging.

“I know what it’s like to be at that football club; they demand that, and it hasn’t been good enough.”
