'Very good': Gareth Southgate says Liverpool have a young midfielder he's 'excited' about

Liverpool have a long list of talented midfielders, many of which were either signed by or developed by Jurgen Klopp.

The likes of Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai are relatively new recruits to the ranks, joining from afar.

But there are also a handful of talented academy graduates at the club, one of which is 23-year-old Curtis Jones.

The midfield man came on leaps and bounds under Klopp, but unfortunately had his latest season heavily disrupted by injury.

But that issue has been put behind him, with Jones handed a first senior England call-up ahead of Euro 2024, a decision that Gabriel Agbonlahor does not agree with.

Gareth Southgate excited about Curtis Jones

The 23-year-old was limited to just 36 appearances in all competitions last time out, but it hasn’t prevented Southgate from giving the midfielder a chance on the international stage.

As well as progressing through the Liverpool youth ranks, Jones has represented England at various youth levels, with his displays for the latter part of the reason behind his senior call-up.

“Curtis we watched all last summer with our under-21s,” said Southgate, as per the official England YouTube channel.

“He had very good spells during this season, then missed spells with an injury, a very unfortunate red card, and then at the end of the season just dropped out of Liverpool’s team.

“But we saw enough through the season to be excited about what he might be able to do and what he could bring to the group.”

Will Curtis Jones make the final England squad?

Southgate has chosen a group of 33 players in preparation for the tournament this summer, with the Three Lions taking on Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland to get ready for Germany.

But the man in the dugout must then cut his group to 26 before the tournament gets underway in mid-June.

That may spell bad news for Jones, who despite having impressed the manager, may have not done enough to land such a prestigious spot.

The Liverpool man has fierce competition in that area, and may even be competing with Anfield teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold for a midfield place within the squad.

World-class stars Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice meanwhile are both certainties, with Conor Gallagher, Adam Wharton and Kobbie Mainoo also looking to clinch a seat on the plane.

In defence, Jones’ Liverpool teammate Jarell Quansah has also secured a place, having also really impressed Southgate.
