Report: Title-winners now want to sign £36m Liverpool player who Jurgen Klopp dropped in his last four games

French champions Paris Saint-Germain are keen to sign one Liverpool player in this summer’s transfer window.

The Reds are about to begin a new chapter under Arne Slot after Jurgen Klopp bid farewell to the club following the final Premier League game of the season.

The incoming Dutch manager will have a decision to make on many members of his squad, and PSG’s interest in one player could complicate things for Liverpool.

PSG eye move for Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate

Ibrahima Konate has been at Liverpool since he joined them from RB Leipzig for £36 million in 2021 (Sky Sports).

The Frenchman has played 90 games for the Reds over the years, and some of his performances have been really good.

However, in the second half of the 2023/24 season, Konate was left on the bench quite frequently. He played just five of Liverpool’s last 15 games in the Premier League.

Klopp even dropped him and left him as an unused substitute in the final four games of the season – against West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Wolves.

L’Equipe have now shared an update on Konate’s future.

The report, as translated by GFFN, claims talks have been going on between Liverpool and the defender over a new deal for several months, with the Reds optimistic that he will agree to an extension.

Konate will enter the final two years of his contract in July, and PSG are said to have made it known to intermediaries that they would be interested in signing the Liverpool defender.

As things stand, there has been no direct contact between the French title-winners and Konate over a move to Paris this summer.

What Konate has already said about playing for PSG

PSG are the biggest club in France, and plenty of players from the country would’ve thought about playing for them one day.

The French giants are always very active when it comes to transfers, and their financial might is impossible to match for most clubs in the world.

If PSG do make a move to sign Konate, the Frenchman will have a decision to make. He has already admitted that he can imagine a scenario where plays at the Parc des Princes.

Speaking to Canal+ in November 2023, Konate was asked if he can see himself joining PSG. He replied: “If I said no, I’d be lying, but if you’re asking, is it one of my objectives? Not at all.”

Speaking further about the French club’s transfers, he said: “PSG has made sure to recruit players who understand each other well and who play with each other for the France national team.

“Even for the people and the Parisian fans, it makes them happy. It’s what they’ve been waiting for for years, having Parisian players or at least French players in the team.”

If you’re wondering, Konate is Parisian. He grew up in the 11th arrondissement of the French capital, which is less than an hour away from PSG’s home ground.
