'Understand...': Sheffield Wednesday now 'weighing up' move for double promotion-winner - journalist

Sheffield Wednesday are now ‘weighing up’ a move for a 6 ft 5 free agent.

Sheffield Wednesday have so far been linked with players further up the pitch, looking to add the likes of Mika Biereth, Karamoko Dembele and Ovie Ejaria to their ranks.

The Owls are also said to be eager to re-sign their former loanees in Ian Poveda, Ike Ugbo and James Beadle.

It now appears that they could look to bolster their backline too, despite conceding only four goals in their last six matches.

Wednesday currently have six first-team centre-backs on their roster, with three of them currently in discussions over a new contract.

Danny Rohl is still keen to add a new defender to his team though and is reportedly eyeing up a move for former Brentford man Charlie Goode.

The Star journalist Joe Crann wrote on X: “Understand that #SWFC are weighing up the possibility of making a move for Brentford defender, Charlie Goode, after it was decided that he’d be leaving the club this summer. The 6’5” 28-year-old centre back is unlikely to be short of options.”

Who is Charlie Goode?

After winning the League Two play-offs with Northampton Town in 2020, Charlie Goode joined Champinship side Brentford.

The centre-half’s time in the English capital never really kicked off though, as he managed only eight appearances as The Bees won promotion to the Premier League.

Goode featured six times in the top flight, while he was sent out on loan to Sheffield United, Blackpool and Wigan Athletic.

The 28-year-old has failed to make more than 13 league appearances in a season since leaving Northampton, but is now looking for a fresh start after he was released by Brentford at the end of the season.

At 6 ft 5, Goode would certainly add a physical presence to Sheffield Wednesday’s team.

The Owls were missing that last season, conceding the sixth-most set pieces in the Championship (14) and only scoring five headers all season.

Would Goode be a good signing?

Goode hasn’t been a regular in a team for years though and has been unable to stand out even in League One.

Sheffield Wednesday definitely need to add some squad depth, but they need to avoid making signings just for the sake of it.

He may be free, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he would improve the squad.

Wednesday already have six centre-backs at Hillsborough, so if they want to add to that, they need to bring in players who could displace their teammates and improve their backline.
