'A risky signing': Carlton Palmer urges Rohl to not sign 'fantastic' free-agent for Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday have been urged not to sign one player they have recently been linked with.

Sheffield Wednesday are weeks away from the transfer window opening but are already deep into their summer plans.

Reports have claimed that Dejphon Chansiri is ready to pump some cash into the club after Danny Rohl put pen to paper on a new contract, while their main focus is also bringing back the three loan successes from last season.

With the likes of Lee Gregory and George Byers leaving the club on free transfers, Wednesday know exactly where they need to freshen up this summer.

The Owls now only have two senior central midfielders in their ranks following the summer exits, and that is assuming that Barry Bannan and Will Vaulks sign new deals.

In their bid to bolster the position, Wednesday are reportedly considering a move for Ovie Ejaria, with the 26-year-old having trained with the club towards the end of the campaign.

Ejaria joined Reading from Liverpool in 2019 but had fallen down the pecking order in League One, before he was released before Christmas.

The midfielder is still on the hunt for a new club and is hoping to earn himself a contract at Hillsborough.

Despite his prior potential, Carlton Palmer has urged Wednesday not to make the ‘risky signing’.

Danny Rohl cannot ‘rejuvenate’ Ovie Ejaria

Speaking to Football League World, he said: “I think this is a risky signing for Sheffield Wednesday. Ovie Ejaria came with a big future and was a talented player, but at his age at 26, Sheffield Wednesday can’t be looking and thinking that they can rejuvenate him.

“If he’s struggling in League One, which is where Reading are, then Sheffield Wednesday, who are pushing to be at the top end of the Championship, he’s not a signing that Sheffield Wednesday want to make to kick on.

“However, I look at the players that Danny has got a tune out of at the end of the season and there are players who were struggling in the Championship but Danny and Chris Powell have been able to get a tune out of them.

“This may represent very little risk on a free transfer, but is he the type of signing that Sheffield Wednesday want to make to show their intentions of moving on?

“Danny Rohl will be looking at being in the play-offs next season. Is he a player that’s going to be part of that squad? I don’t think so.

“It’s definitely a risky signing, but if you’re not paying any money for him, it’s a risk you might want to take.”

Sheffield Wednesday shouldn’t make signings just because they’re free

Ovie Ejaria wouldn’t be much of a risk for Sheffield Wednesday given that they wouldn’t be paying anything for him, but it isn’t exactly a signing that would get fans excited either.

The midfielder would surely only be brought in as a squad player, and Danny Rohl is clearly a professional at bringing fallen talents back to life.

However, that doesn’t mean he should just keep bringing them to the club in the hope that he can make a player out of them.

Ejaria failed in both the Championship and League One and could have been an appropriate signing if they were still aiming to battle relegation, but if the Owls want to push on towards the top of the table, then he isn’t their man.

Wednesday should continue to look at some free agents as relatively risk-free options, but risk-free doesn’t necessarily mean good.
